THANK YOU SO MUCH for this update. I was getting really worried reading between the lines on the delays; I'm hoping this means Dave has turned an important corner in his recovery.

Francine hasn't called yet today, but she sounded better last night. Supposedly, Dave should get to go back to Tulsa to a rehab facility there in about a week after the back surgery. And now that milestone has been made. :) I think his left leg will probably just require a boot. I'll find out from Francine next call and post.

Francine just called. Dave is back in his room. His physical therapy will start this afternoon. Francine will check to see timetable for release to Tulsa.

Francine said that Dave was given two pints of blood yesterday. She is not sure why. She also said that he has some fluid in his lungs. She's meeting with his rehab team on Monday and will let me know what they say.

I spoke briefly with Michelle last night (Sun 9/23), and some of this info overlaps with Cat's last update, but here you go...

Dave’s been a bit anemic, but Michelle didn’t sound too concerned about that, so I guess the transfusion helped there. The pneumonia is pretty normal in this kind of situation, so sounds like the docs feel like they’re on top of that, too.

Something they’re anxious to do is to get Dave back to Tulsa. When and how are, of course, the big things, given his condition, as well as ensuring there’s a strong team back here that is willing and able to care for him. Michelle didn’t say much more about when they would try to do that, but that they’re starting to work on the details. Personally, I don’t see that happening until sometime next week.

And Michelle did say that she’s had two doctors tell her in the last couple of days that most people that age who experience all of those injuries don’t survive. But hey, we know Dave and we’re not surprised are we?

Anyway, it’s no time to let down our guard, so don’t stop on the thoughts and prayers! I’m sure Dave and Francine would still appreciate cards, but I don’t think they’re taking phone calls yet.
Let there be rain!

I like many others have learned so much from Dave! He is in alot of ways responsible for my level of paddling. We all missed you at the vous! It won't be an easy recovery, but I have faith in ya! Remember your the man Dave and loved by many!

Arrangements have been made for Dave to fly home by air ambulance to a rehab facility in Tulsa. Barring blood clots or some other issue developing, he should be there by Monday at the latest. He also sat up on the side of his bed (with assistance) and was shaved today. Anyone who's been around Dave Reid on a river trip knows that made him feel better, for sure!

I don't know Dave , but he sounds like a stand up guy. I know this has to be hard on his family both mentally and financially as medical costs aren't cheap. If you that are close to him know if any if his family need travel arrangements to get home, I can donate some airline tickets to get them home. Let me know if they need them.

Let us know when you have a mailing address for the rehab facility and or David's home for those snail mail cards. I got one card that I did not want to send him until I knew he wasn't going to tear something laughing.

Thanks, Eric

having broken both legs, my nose, and had 2 back surgeries, i can understand part of daves situation. thankfully, my events spanned 30 years rather than one day. there were great doctors in all 4 states where i was put back together so i can believe dave is getting excellent care. the hard part for dave begins now in rehab. he will need all our continued support to get thru the next 3-6 months. please keep the thread going. jack danielson

Hope you are back up on your feet and in a boat again soon Dave! Lots of people sending you good vibes, but none more or stupider than me and my family!
