I know I love to read this stuff too, this is by far the most I've enjoyed the board since its rained. Ya I don't know about switching any out fitting around in that, I think dagger pretty much though of everything for that boat. I mean comon, it has flames. I have paddled parts of the ocoee on my knees in my allstar (rode the company bus to the put in and forgot my paddle), not recommended, but thats as far as I'm going to go with any of my boats. I honestly did not think that anyone knew anybody that c-1ed that wasn't already an old school bad*$$ open boater, and by old school I figured they were older than thirty. I racked my brain pretty hard before posting that too. I just find it hard to believe its growing, when everyone I ever saw on the Arkansas or Ocoee in an openboat had grey hair. I want to see video of this 12 year old girl doing twenty foot drops still. Well, I'm late for class,

There was a realy cool shot of her on baby falls in the new open boat. dont think she playboates much but when she does watch out. cant remember her last name but the article was in paddler mag. a few years ago. I think there is room for all water type (river that is) sports that need not be pop. for them to be a family or healing type way to get your mind off work, school. beauty in the eye of the beholder type stuff you know. If I dont do it that dont mean it sucks that just means that i may suck at it.

I didn't realize you were naming someone you read about in paddler magazine. But sorry to hijack, that boat is really sweet, and Fish should buy me one

If you hit the move, C1's will always move faster and throw bigger than a kayak doing the same move. There is just more torque due to an elevated center of gravity, increased core mobility innate to the sitting position and more centralized mass due to the legs being folded under as opposed to out in front of the paddler. Yes, it is entirely correct the athlete makes the moves happen. 85% of people I saw at the Gauley I playboats couldn't even paddle them, much less take advantage of their capabilities in a feature. They needed a river running boat. For those pushing the envelope though, composites offer a lighter boat with insane rigidity, equalling faster and mor dynamic moves. This is, after all, what wins events:

Can't remember his name, but ben and I ran the ocoee with a dude in a C1. It was an old prijon creeker that he had decked out. Guy couldn't have been more than 26 or so and he tore up hell hole in it. Granted, that's one random dude and not the worlds biggest gnar but still - shows some young folk prefer a single blade and an uncomfortable ride.

The girl you are thinking of, her name is likely Haliey Popp. She is a great all around paddler who also happens to be in open boat.

As for the discussion pertaining to introduction to the sport and evolution into another craft, this is much more common in racing. Benn Fraker, sixth in Bejing C1 started in a kayak. Tad Dennis, three years on the US Team in C1 started in a kayak. Liam Malakoff, a promising C1 racer in the DC area regularly paddles Great Falls at high water for something to do also, you guessed it, started in a kayak. I'm pretty sure Casey Eichfeld did as well. They are all under 30.

One of the major differences in racing though is difficulty through precision execution rather than difficulty through mere survival. Another is approaching paddling as a sport as opposed to a recreation. Training daily means there are not years spent trying to get back what was had in a kayak. Finally, from coaching quite a few of the top juniors in the last few years, I can attest there are people who were born to canoe and others to kayak just by the way their bodies move. One or the other is simply going to be much more rewarding to do in the long run.

As for the Green Race, the field as I know it thus far is Benn Fraker, Tad Dennis, Scott McClesky, Jeff Larimer, and Dave Hepp in longboat C1. As for shortboat, I'm really not entirely sure. In case you're wondering, they are all US Team veterans. The footage I've seen is pretty awesome. They've been firing up Gorilla Blue Angles style, bombing down one after another and styling it. There's one video out there with Tad launching the monkey on a crossbow boof to perfectly line it up for him to shoot cleanly through speedtrap.

I'll be there paddling in Tad's shortboat, a Karnali set up as a C1. Then I'll be setting safety on the course. If you leave today, you can still make it!
