Wow, I feel so bad for you guys, I hope this sickness doesn't spread to our neck of the woods. We still enjoy the feeling (illusion) of safety around here that you guys are alluding to. It's probably because of the Compton Mafia and the fact that so many folks are home during the day, with big guns!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear of this Bob. I'll keep and watch out for the gear. Hopefully, Cowper is right and we'll see your boat floating down the river with a couple of yahoos in it.
Did the Sheriff's dept make a report of the incident?

Locks stop honest people.... the others do not care & will work around it one way or another. I have an alarm & insurance. I did get the policy on my kayak gear just in case.

As the public becomes more aware of our gear & the value it will be more of a temptation for thieves. Kayaking is growing in popularity & makes it easier to notice us & any unattended gear.

Keep us posted on any developments.

Shooting thieves may be a little harsh but some cultures used to cut off their hands.Just something to think about.(Obviously I've been a victim of theft and burgulary.)

To understand the crime you have to understand the motivivation behind the crime.
Did this person see a canoe and think"I'd like to paddle that"and take it?I think not.
In this part of the country it is a well known fact(although not openly discussed)that a lot of stolen property ends up in Southeast Oklahoma(Eagletown, etc.)due to the meth use. These lowlives have obviously recognizied an oppurtunity and are making the best of it.
This is'nt speculation but I won't mention the names of my sources. Some are high ranking law enforcement officers.
I use cable locks but I know all that will do is slow them down a little and maybe make them look for an easier target.(On second thought it's best to leave your boat unlocked and unattended.)

Been many years since I moved to Tulsa from North Georgia and spent a lot of time driving around SE OK and AR from Mena up to the Buffalo area. Just looking for hiking, climbing and boating spots.

I saw a bunch of neat places especially in SE OK that I did not expect in that that area.

Makes me really sad to hear that the Meth people are doing business in that beautiful area.

I know the meth people have been active in the Panhandle areas of OK and Texas. We even lost a State Trooper due to a meth cooker shooter caught unawares along a deserted road in the area. Even here in Tulsa the news often reports of some motel room or private home have meth cookers driving down the area. Don't know about NW Arkansas, but would not be surprised if meth is there as well.

Sign of the times I guess. Still sad to see happening.

Sadly NW AR and SW MO are both inundated with meth.

Unfortunately meth is a major problem everywhere, not just Oklahoma. A meth head will steal anything and it doesn't matter how it's secured. Google copper theft electrical substation to see how far they will go.

Air conditioning condensing units are also popular because many have copper tube/aluminum fin outdoor coils. It creates a market for new protective products.

I did'nt intend to single out Southeast Oklahoma in a derogatory manner,it just seems I hear of a lot of meth related incidents in that region.
I know a lot of really great people in that area and I'm sure they are the majority.
We have more than our share of lowlives in Arkansas and I suspect they transport stolen property to Oklahoma to make it harder to trace.(Or they would rather do time in a federal pen than a state pen.) :twocents:

Moniker,

I am a transplant now proud Okie and just as proud to be a Honorary Arkie as many of my boating buds live in that great state plus I spend a great deal of my time on Arkansas creeks and recreational areas.

No offense taken from your post by me.

I know here in Tulsa it is almost a nightly local news event that some meth heads have stolen copper (one time from a active substation and one got fried), breaking into homes to steal tv's, car jacking in shopping centers or burning down structures while cooking the stuff or looking for fast money to buy it. Not to pick on Meth Heads as we now get a lot of gang activity as well. I44 has become a supply line up to the North and seems like we are a battle ground for control of that as well.

I just remember spending a lot of time down in SE OK years ago looking for creeks to run, still do look down around Antlers area, and for some reason had not heard of the meth problem there.

Now I know.

Sad to hear that Meth culture has invaded the MO and AR Ozarks as well.

It does seem from the Tulsa evening news that when they are high on the stuff nothing stops them. Few months ago the news reported that a man was kicking down the door of a residential home. Home owner had a fire arm and shouted out multiple times that he had a gun and knew how to use it. Man kept kicking in the door panels till he got a foot through. Home owner fired a couple rounds into the door and when the police got there the guy was dead on the steps. Hospital reported the perp was loaded with meth and other drugs. Turns out he had attempted to kick in another home's front door just up the street. We have also had other news reports where the perps got into the house before police got there and beat up occupants. Home is not the safe haven it used to be.

Sign of the times I think and so far law enforcement is loosing the battle to keep them in check.

I'll also list this in a separate listing but my canoe has been found and returned. On todays Caddo river Black Friday clean-up, one of the locale outfitters came down the Glenwood access to see if anyone needed a shuttle. Wes said that we didn't but that we were doing a river clean-up and looking for a stolen canoe. The outfitter said that several people had reported seeing a canoe that they thought might be his across the river from the Glenwood access. Cowper, and Mike from Saline Canoe rentals paddled across and sure enough came up with not only my canoe but also the paddles, P.F.D. the painters and the lock and cable. I live a charmed life and have unbelievable friends. Thanks to everyone who expressed their concern. A special thanks to Cowper and Debo who made a trip down the Caddo just to look for my boat. BOB
