Canoe ok on my car?

I generally use foam 3/4in pipe insulation wrapped around my crossbars secured with zip ties every 8 inches or so. Usually have to change it several times a year but its cheap. It give the boat something to "bite" into and reduce slipping on the bars. Several others have used various vinyl tubing (large bore ) available at lowe's in the plumbing dept in the same fashion.

Awww, why not just get your girlfriend a kayak and take the easy way out?

Jan has a point.. Tandems tend to be "divorce machines" as well. You can haul at least 3 kayaks on that car using a stacker.

My girlfriend is just terrified of paddling a Sit in kayak so the SOT was really for her. i want to get another kayak at some point but I'm clueless when it comes to WW . I thought a canoe would be something good for both of us to use. i know she has been on a canoe multiple times but neither one of us are a "pro"

They are the classic whitewater canoes, sadly no longer in production. If Steve's is in good shape (probably is), $350 is a very good price. The closest thing to it is probably a Buffalo (I'm gonna get clobbered for that) but the Buffalo canoes are no where near as well-constructed or durable.

I sent a PM with background information on Blue Hole Canoe Company. This boat was molded in the Sunbright, TN facility. I have pictures but can't attach them to either the PM or to the e-mail generated through the message board.

You don't have to worry about damaging the canoe by putting it on your racks; no padding is needed. The Blue Hole has aluminum gunwales (aka gunnels).

UPDATE: i will be buying the blue hole but now its time for me to get some good straps, any recommendations on where/what kind to buy? currently i have some cheap straps from OMTC that are ok for my kayak but i would imagine i am going to want something more sturdy. Also have been using 550 lb paracaord to tie down the bow/stern because my kayak is not that heavy. someone suggested climbing rope but i know those are kind of expensive , or can you buy it by the foot?

I like using 6mm climbing cord which is sold by the foot. You can probably find it at a local outdoor store. You can see REI's offering at http://www.rei.com/product/716225/pmi-a ... y-cord-6mm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Get two 10-foot sections.

I like using a Follow-Through Figure 8 or Bowline at one end and a Trucker's Hitch on the other when tying down the boat.

Don't be tempted to use climbing rope for the bow and stern painters on the canoe. It doesn't float. You are better off using a cheap rope from Home Depot or Wal-Mart since it does float.
