Re: GeoTrashing on Cadron – Who’s Interested? (Sat or Sun??
Hate to hear that John. I promise we won't be able to get it all on this first expedition, we'll save a little for you.
I think things are shaping up good so far - we have enough folks and boats to make a pretty good haul, even if we don't get it all.
I'm going to hold off on finalizing the time until I can confirm on access issues; also, I'm hoping to hear from Jan on whether she is wanting to coordinate times with the road cleaning effort. I'm "leaning" toward a meeting time of 10, but please check again to be sure tomorrow evening!

OK, thought it over. John, if you still want to go Saturday, I'll go then too. To avoid confusion with the "main" effort on Sunday, let's use PM's for the details.
Everybody else: TIME will be "Meet at 10 AM Under Hwy 65 bridge".
Wes, yes, bring an extra canoe - we only have about 4 open boats; we'll need the extra capacity.

Cooper - Since I originally posted earlier this week, I have learned that work will take me out of town for three days beginning Sunday, so I am fine skipping this one and spending Saturday with the kiddos. Thanks for the offer and good luck on Sunday. John

Something came up Sunday so we probably won't come. If it changes will let you know. Will try to be there for another time maybe.

Cowper & someone else are going to go Saturday, too, from what I read. Look back a few posts. I'd PM Cowper if I were you & wanting to help out.
Thanks.

Still not over the cold symptoms, so I need to stay inside and warm. Anyone in the Conway area is welcome to come by and pick up a canoe.

Wes,
If you don't mind, send me a PM with your location. If we're on the same side of town, I might take you up on that canoe offer to increase our carrying capacity.
RIVER UPDATE: I was there yesterday to see how the level is doing. (also got out 5 tires, including one that looks like it might come from a Model T or similar vintage car) The river is "low but floatable". There were only limited surfing opportunities, but there are still shoals and eddies, we are NOT going to have to drag the boats down the river.
If you've been "lurking" and thinking about it, then come on out! With Wes down and out, we could use more canoes to get our carrying capacity up without having to overload anybody.
10 AM, Sunday, 1/22, under the Hwy 65 bridge!

The weather man missed it again ! But it didn't scare the 2.5 canoe loads u river bootys off. Great day on the creek! Pictures coming soon , as most that have been on an expedition with cowp know that it was dark when we got off the creek. Between that and the fog the cam would not get a good pic. Anyone that would like to see all the nice stuff we hauled, it's under the bridge awaiting extraction. And joes was great too!!

Re: GeoTrashing on Cadron – TRIP REPORT (SUNDAY 1/22/12)
What we lacked in numbers we made up for in stubbornness. After helping Jan pick up a little at the take out, Jeff, Debo and I made our way upstream for an 8.5 mile run down to the Hwy 65 bridge. We tackled about 12 of the locations listed above. Our “take” included:
2 canoes (one ABS, one aluminum, neither worth salvaging)
Tent
2 man raft
Wading pool
Heavy metal table
Porta-jon door
About 30’ piece of an oil boom
Large piece of fiberglass (part of an old boat??)
About 6 tires
Short piece of plastic culvert (about 24” diameter)
Several objects of unknown origin
The photos don’t do it justice, but they do give insight into our take-out time – we got to the take out about 5 minutes after sunset. And then on to Joes pizza, where we ran into Clif.
At different times during the day, we got to use a shovel, a propane torch, a hammer, knife, throw rope, pulley and caribiners, duct tape, pretty much everything we brought (except the hacksaw – never got to use the hacksaw. Maybe next time…)
Now that I think about it, I guess we ended the day with twice as many canoes as we started out with. I think we really did have all the fun we could stand!

ABS boat in front, aluminum boat in background. Note split in side of ABS boat. The other side was worse, with a similar split that went all the way through.

Towing the boats up the hill to be sure they were above the high water mark...

We didn't find a partridge in a pear tree, but Cowper found a dead goose in a trash bag . . .

Looks like a good haul! What was the propane torch for?

Re: GeoTrashing on Cadron – TRIP REPORT (SUNDAY 1/22/12)
Original plan was to test effectiveness at cutting the porta-jon into smaller pieces for transport.
Actual uses were:
1) drying the surface of the ABS boat so I could duct-tape the crack - tape wasn't sticking at all in a drizzling rain (thank you Billy for teaching me that trick!),
2) Cutting the kiddie pool into two smaller pieces (it was heavy enough plastic that I didn't want to dull my good river knife cutting on something that was caked with sand and grit)
3) Melting hinge attachment points on the porta-jon door so we could separate the pieces.
It was not enough "juice" to easily cut up the the door as I had hoped, but it still turned out to be a useful tool overall.
