Somehow I get the idea the borrower feels entitled to do nothing, since the lender has/makes more money and the paddle was not in A1 shape. Paddler B needs to man up and replace the paddle, lest next time he's caught up a creek without a paddle.
My $.02 worth.

Income or skill level have no bearing unless A and B are married and A coaxed B to put on the creek!
B offers A a paddle that is comparable or better than what was borrowed. A has the option of refusing replacement or guestimating value of said paddle if a suitable replacement can not be found.

If A & B are married, B has every right to use either end of paddle on A's head.

Because you know darn well A is gonna be laughing his A## off at B when the paddle breaks.

Jan, you make me laugh. How do you know it's "her" that broke the paddle
If you have friends like me, it's always just a bonus to get my stuff back at all!!!

Roger is tempoarily unavailable, but I have his proxy. You may borrow his raft and take it down the most stob-infested creek in the state. Understand that if any damage is done to the raft that all the people on the trip will contribute to a raft-rehabilitation fund to repair said raft to your I mean Roger's satisfiction.
My raft, unfortunately,is unavailable at the present.

HE definately has borrowing rights for trips on a NEW Zodi Hot water heater. I hope he gets to use it with his raft someday and I hope I am there to help him use it.

Is there something I am missing?
Sorry, I could not help myself!

1. Randy, as Roger's wife, I'm part owner of that raft too. Take me with you when you and your family uses the raft and then you'll be okay.
Wasn't this a debate on Friends in the 90s? Figuring out how people of different incomes can do the same activities when those activities cost a lot more money than one can regularly afford is difficult to negotiate. I think on Friends the debate was about how to pay for dinners out.
Seriously, though, here's how I feel about the original question. Paddler B should have offered to purchase a new paddle of comparable quality--like others said, return it in better condition than he or she got it. If borrowing and breaking is not a regular habit of Paddler B, then Paddler A, with his or her better income, could then have graciously told Paddler B that no replacement was necessary, as it was an old paddle anyway. Both paddlers get out with dignity and grace.
On the other hand, if Paddler B is in the habit of frequent borrowing (and maybe breaking), then Paddler B needs to buy the new paddle and get his or her own gear.
I hope that Paddler B offered to pay so that Paddler A could be gracious, but I'm guessing based on the post that that didn't happen.

I was brought up to only borrow something if you're willing to replace it should something happen to it. I can bet that the normal man can't go without it on his conscious, if so I'd find a new paddling buddy.
Good friends usually share the same values.
