Cowper, go to your local Cat house and get material(shims, stainless or plastic) for a telescoping hoe's stick. Re: Subaru wagon owner questions
All I can add is that if you have an older vehicle with the old circuit breaker style turn signal blinker, you'll have to upgrade to a heavy duty blinker, these are solid state, have no moving parts, and use a series of transistors to regulate blink intervals with just about any electrical load, as long as its a 12 volt system. The old circuit breaker blinkers will blink very rapidly (tick-tick-tick) with the added load of trailer signals, so an upgrade is necessary. As for the hitch, do some research before buying, and if in doubt, walk out. Try to find an installer who has examples of what it will look like, or better yet, a car like yours with an installe hitch for you to check out. If the finished work on your car looks manky or shoddy, make a fuss. Always remember When in Doubt, Walk Out

Re: Subaru wagon owner questions
Not trying to hijack but on the topic of Subaru, I've been looking at the new Subaru Forrester (2009+). Unlike the older one there are no tow loops on the rear side. I'm trying to figure out how I would tie a stern line from a canoe. The good news is the racks are more "normal" than the Outback. It's also very well reviewed/rated. BTW there's a tow loop on the front end but it's fairly far underneath & it seams like the the plastic guard over/under the front bumper would easily be damaged by a bow line tied to the loop.
Re: Subaru wagon owner questions
Take a couple of pieces of sash cord and tie them in a loop. Look under the hood for some solid supports (usually some piece that bolted down on both ends) and secure the loops to that. Open hood pull them out to side, lower hood and voila! Secure tie-downs.
Don down at OOO had some with webbing and a grommet that you could remove a bolt, place loop in position, and replace bolt. Hide them when you don't need them, pop them out when you do.
Know about that rear tie-down!
I've tied out to my hitch before.
