Ol Slick, One tick did the trick, made me sick.
In 18 years of living in the country followed by camping in the woods, I have seen and pulled off my share of ticks. Never a problem . . . till this one. It nearly killed me. Two days in ICU followed by two more days in a regular hospital room with all kinds of things attached to me . . . including a catheter . . . then there was the spinal tap, three aborted and forth one finally took. Meningitis and pneumonia.
Memory loss and missed some beautiful paddling days in May-June.
Ironically, my brother who still lives in the country got Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever in June. First time for him as well.
I have a new appreciation for what them thar ticks can do.
I just took down the tick avatar. Next time I hear about someone getting tick fever it will go back up.
So, about the other topic. Two choices. Cat hole (it is still legal) in the woods (not on or near the gravel bar) or paddle it out.

We are all afflicted with Cognitive Dissonance. The greater our religious, social, financial or political affiliation, the greater the affliction. We hear what we want to hear. We believe what we want to believe. Truth becomes irrelevant.
Re: floating info
We've got em here pretty thick, seems they've always been thick and there's different kinds of them as well. I've been pulling the pesky critters off my parts(if ya get my drift) ever since my pup days, and knock on wood, never had a problem other that that bump and itch.
Several of my neighbors have had some different tick born diseases over the past few years though, and they have suffered because of them, sure makes one wary of ticks.
I do not believe I've heard of anyone that went through the kind of hell you did though.

Re: floating info
I remember when I was a farm kid sitting in church on a Sunday morning and felt, usually a Chigger, 'just gnawing away' on my little privates. Boy, I seemed to squirm and think how I was really going to scratch when Mom carried us back home after the service
It is of little consequence in light of the misery Chiggers caused me growing up, but in later studies of biology I was interested to understand what we call 'Chiggers', or 'Red Bugs',is a common name for the immature form of the Human Mite. The adults actually don't bother people but the young stage of the mite has to have a 'blood meal' in order to mature. I'm sure this is more than anyone wanted to know.

As thick as the woods were when we visited Alaska a while back, I told Marlo this would look like prime tick country in Arkansas, but they have narry a one up there, or snakes either.
