Re: 2009 Surf N Turf!!
Hello folks,
Random thoughts as Surf & Turf is right around the corner (7/25) and I am in need of a little help.
Steve Faubel has graciously secured a Big Honkin Grill courtesy of First Security Bank and he will be the Head Burger N Dog Chef. I'll be buying a buttload of burgers, dogs, buns chips, mayo, and mustard. We need volunteers to provide desserts, and perhaps a few fresh sides such as lettuce or slaw to go along with the main courses.
I will also need some helpers to coordinate, setup, and takedown of the food area. Will probably need some more tables to serve it all on as well.
If you can assist please post here.
I have previous commitments from the following:
David MacClanahan and perhaps Kate - general help where needed
Jim and Marlo Kruger - sheet cake, baked beans, one or perhaps two 3x6 folding tables, shop fan and extension cords as well as clean up and trash assistance!!! (Jim is my hero!!!)
John Fletcher - Sliced Tomatoes, set up assistance
Dave Robertson - major tunes and bubba sized speakers on the river left side of river
Ted Smethers - Turn's on the water at 10:00 AM :)
If anyone wants to be Steve's Assistant Burger Burning Chef let me know.
We will have porta-potties set up on the river left (porterfield side) by the way. Please use the permanent facilities on the river left side.
Water arrives at about 12:30ish and we will start serving/burning burgers and dogs about the same time give or take 30 minutes. IMPORTANT - BYOB and Soft Drinks!!

The water will be on at 10 AM, expect to see it begin to rise at the ledge around 12:30 and mostly full by 1 PM. Should start to go down around dusk.
Also, I 've got a bunch of new kayaker friends coming down from Springdale area. The Beardens and the Walkers. Mostly a bunch of kids that have just learnded to roll in the pool with my old purple Corsica Matrix. So if you get to meet thiem, let them borrow boats and show them how to ferry and catch eddies because I'm taking them to the Ocoee the next weekend.
You'll know them, because the dad, Dr. Jeff Bearden is a Walter Felton look alike - at least in build.
I will be at the Hot Springs Gun Show that morning and should arrive in time to chow and paddle.
Ted

Re: 2009 Surf N Turf!! Saturday July 25
REMINDER......... Surf & Turf is this Saturday. The official ACC sponsored stuff is basically just the big feed up on the hill overlooking the Rockport whitewater ledge. Any other activities are totally UNOFFICIAL! We will be arriving around 10:00 am to set up. Anyone who can help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for those who have already contacted me!! We can always use help at the end of the day too.
A few reminders..........
Remmel will be generating water at the Dam at 10:00 AM and water will arrive at the ledge about 12:30ish.
Bring your own chair and drinks.
I could still use some desserts, and other side dish type things. Feel free to bring whatever you like.
Burgers and Dogs will be served starting about 12:30 or 1:00 PM and we will keep them coming for about an hour or two.
We will likely have a lot of new paddlers and visitors. Introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.
I am planning to bring nametags. Please humor me and wear one!
Camping....... It is allowed Saturday night but please contact me and let me know. My cell phone is 501-944-0480.
Dave Robertson is planning to bring a big sound system for the river left bank so we can do some rock & roll surfing. Remember to give him a big attaboy!! Thanks Dave!!
I am told that the Malvern police will step up patrols on the river left (whitewater park) side of the river mainly to watch for car break ins and vandalism. Don't do anything that will get you thrown in the Hot Spring Co Pokey!!
This is a good time to bring that extra boat you are wanting to get rid of cuz there will likely be some potential buyers. Ditto those of you who are wanting to buy gear.
Be sure to plan to attend the Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters party later that night in Hot Springs. It should be a blast too!!
Anyone who might want to bring a jambox for tunes on the Porterfield side would be welcome. I'm old so if you start playing rap I'll ask you to leave
Directions.....
From the North, cross the Ouachita river on I-30 at Malvern and take the next exit. Go toward Lake Catherine St Park and start looking for the ACC Banner or sign of some sort on the right. Go through the gate and down the hill to the Porterfield property overlooking the Ledge.
That's about it!! See you all this weekend!!

I recently moved to Malvern, found out about the whitewater park, and heard about this event. I was a commercial rafting guide on the Ocoee for a few seasons, and miss whitewater. I don't kayak per se, but want to learn.
Can I come to this event without being a member? I'll bring extra beer?!

Yes, it's a picnic we throw every summer and all are welcome! Ask around and most folks there will be happy to let you try a few yaks (at least sit in them if not try 'em out in a calm area on the river) and most will talk your ear off if you start asking for opinions about best boats, how to get started, etc. etc. If it's paddling-related, you probably won't find many of us at a loss of words!cate the rafter wrote:Can I come to this event without being a member?
I'm adding this here too as a FYI for those coming (also posted on the "how many rivers have you paddled" thread below)...
I'll have the remaining "Been There, Paddled That" Arkansas Canoe Club t-shirts available for purchase this weekend - will try to set up near the pavilion on Porterfield side around/just after lunch time to sell them.
Cheers,
Heather (aka Lupe)

OK, but only if you paint your toenails --- we expect anyone who rafts to have painted toenails....cate the rafter wrote:I was a commercial rafting guide on the Ocoee.... Can I come to this event without being a member?
We can fix that...I don't kayak per se, but want to learn.
