Renee, just a little bit of information about the Rhomboid muscles, there a two, a major and a minor. Specifically, minor is superior to major and originates at the seventh cervical and first thoracic spinous processes. Major originates at the second to fifth thoracic spinous processes. Both of them insert on the medial border of the scapula. The actions of both of these muscles is to elevate and retract, or pull back the scapula. Also, these are superficial muscles of the back, or muscles toward the skin of the back. Could you have injured the rhomboids, absolutely but depending on where the problem is and the nature of the problem it is hard to say what is injured. These muscles are also innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve, which could also be the source of your pain. Physical rehab is never a bad idea, especially for those of us that abuse our bodies the way we do, I think the doctors would agree with that, but remember, literally speaking, if you dont use it, you lose it. within reason, haha!

Hey Renee,
I'm just a little confused by what your doctor told you, since there's not a "joint" where the scapula is adjacent to the rib cage. Anyway, just my curiousity setting in. Bottom line is to rest for a bit, do PT, and take your vitamin I regularly. And like you said, hand paddles might put less strain on that area. Hope you get better soon! When that happens, come to the Ocoee!

Cathy - I'm not sure what all he said and probably misunderstood since I was in the mindset of just "fix it." Anyway, he cracked/popped/adjusted some bones in that area - not sure of the joint or where the problem was. I just know he said it wasn't the muscle. Anyway, I went again today after paddling this weekend and he adjusted again. But I actually felt better after paddling - still used the hand paddles all weekend.
I have got work in Nashville, so I'll be up that way soon!
