Re: Big Piney 3.5
Ok, here comes the arkayou soap box, that half ton has kept in the closet for .99 years now.....
Roger, I know you've been missing my soap box ! don't even pretend you don't miss it
you know, when i "officially" became a member of the ACC I never gave up my membership in the ac/bc ! But I did quiet my "opinions" as they were observed as unhelpful in general for the ACC and its ties to multiple state agencies....One of them in particular the AGFC. (I will note that being banned did interfere with my paddling communications with friends and other boaters who were not yet friends)
However, I would like to think that the AGFCs involvment and continued involvement with my conservation activities in association with and support of the ACC....especially after my scathing and inflamatory rhetoric of the "man" or "the babboon lassoer" and his lack of education before enforcing..... has only shown that the ranting and mouthing of an individual as related to "water" and "paddling" and "club" on this message board does not interfere with club business, club agendas, or anything else in relation to the relationship of the ACC and a said state agency.
with that off of my chest.....
I kind of wish mister ac/bc was still around in cyber club form too. (although his spirit endures)
and
In my "opinion", the guage at 164 is out of calibration in relation to the new dynamic changes in the river such as upstream streambank erosion with affects the thalweg depth, and river channel width at the point of measurement. So, while the transducer still measures flow accurately according to its depth and the pressure above the head- the flow at the transducer's position is wider and therfore lower than it would have been if the channel did not change. So the calibrated guage is just out of sync with the old reference point.
Anywho I would also like to see a guage at fort douglas ! how easy would be then to run the extra long shuttle from walnut valley to fort douglas ? It would save a couple of hours for sure ! Take out those high readings as can often be associated with intense rainfall in hurricane or indian creeks....
Man it would be good ! I'd like to see those buffalo gages back in action too.
$ 1.67
I Hope we can get out and paddle on some of todays rainfall, which is now running off into and entering the streams !
What a good time to double check the LP guage with the 164 guage.

Nare did I infer that you missing me, as I was not gone but instead my soapbox was gone.
The correct term for an A plus comback should have been "your soapbox was gone?
" but I'll give you an A anyway for the effort.
I am currently putting the soapbox away again. So you better not miss it, silly

Re: Big Piney 3.5
Larry mentioned the sight gauge, and maybe repainting with larger numerals. Sometimes I think this could be the best solution at all locations where there is a sight gauge. Before the advent of the electronic gauges the USGS now uses, they had commercial sight gauges very precisely and scientifically scaled in feet and tenths of a foot with really very little distinction in the foot or half-foot marks from the tenths of a foot, not good when viewing from a distance for me either...like trying to read a thermometer from across the river.
In addition to the numerical markings, I think a color-coded band to one side of the numerals also most helpful. :)

Looks like the difference in the 2 gauges is .7 at this time. USGS is showing 4.72, I drove to Long Pool (with the binocs) and the gauge shows 5.4.
