I remember some years ago, The "Upstream Edge" a Canadian based company, once built composite reproductions of some of the popular play boats of the day. I haven't even thought of them in years and if it weren't for this discussion, I probably wouldn't have remembered them.

I remember Kyle Elliot bringing a composite built Perception Piroette "S" to the last Dirks races. Such a beautiful red boat. It weighed just over twenty-two pounds. Simply fantastic boat.

I would not be a bit surprised if a replacement "Angst" squirt boat from my boats builder didn't cost two grand plus at today's prices.

It is very tempting to consider being able to throw around a play boat which weighs nearly half what the plastics are weighing. I would not be surprised to see one in these parts before to long.

I'm afraid I will not be the one of the first to own one, But I will consider a composite build one day for sure.

This is all about marketing. Who cares if they sell 50 boats at $2500 or not? They may not sell one. Doesn't matter. In a paddling world that Jackson is taking over, Wavesport is trying to re-establish itself as 'The" innovation leader. Pros will be throwing outrageous air in these boats on buseater, at FIBARK, and paddlers will salivate, even hacks like me. The boat will be in magazines (and not just paddling ones), on YouTube, in DVDs and discussion boards.

This is the hot concept car at the auto show that everyone wishes they had and demonstrates what the future may hold. I think it's a genius marketing move on their part. I'm glad to see someone push the envelope. They'll probably sell a lot more plastic Projects thanks to the composite one. Kudos to WS.

I will have to argue that this is not about marketing. I met Bryan Kirk this summer out west and he was certainly in love w/ the composite project. I think its about giving paddlers what they want and the best paddlers like Bryan were stoked to try and take things to another level in a stiff & light playboat. Anyhow I have never considered a shoestring backband and generically shaped hulls as innovative products!(Could be useful if you pop a lace while portaging the sh!t in your jackson )And furthermore the future of this sport is steepcreeking and in that niche of paddling both companies have been left far behind by liquidlogic and dagger for years!Also, I dont consider a company's total sales of playboats as an indicator they are taking over the paddling world! I guess it depends on what world you boat in, eh! JOE C TEAM GREEN!

Now that you mention it my avatar is butters...

I'm gonna start making boats out of paper mache, with a thin candy shell like M & M's. That way it's super light and I could package it with a bag of peanuts and a stewardess for all those massive airs. I have worked up a feasability plan:

Pros:

1. Paper mache is light, and therefore massive air time. The happy air sickness bag ( tm ) could be a winner option here.
2. Thanks to the thin candy shell, if you get trapped on the river..all you'd need would be graham crackers and marshmellows..then just eat the boat.
3. Easily repairable with more paper, glue, and melted chocolate ( lighter not included )
4. Eco friendly since paper is recycleable and chocolate is umm..meltable.
5. If you happen to be boating in a large river of coffee..the chocolate coating acts as instant Mocha-fier.
6. The cost could be decidedly reduced to a mere grand, saving approx. 1500 bucks compared to carbon dated kevlar fiber optic reinforced fancy schmancy elitest boats.
7. C'mon. Who wouldn't want to paddle a candy coated boat. I mean really.

Cons:

1. Chocolate coating may melt during summer boating sessions.
2. Some people might be allergic to chocolate. But who wants to boat with someone like that anyway.
3. No dry space for marshmellows and graham crackers in stern. We aren't miracle workers here, we are but human.
4. You could lose multiple boating buddies due to their unseeming boat envy.
5. Nose bleeds from extreme mache loop airtime possibly a negative factor. But you can lose up to 2-3 pints before any real problems occur, so let's negate this one shall we.

CLearly, the Pros have it on this choice. I shall start taking orders in the near future. Financial backers with low fundamental knowledge of boring, fancy business workings feel free to contact me with monetary offers. I'll handle the rest.
