Actheceptable boats for WW school

Post by Jaytee » Mon Mar 08, 2010 5:11 pm

In the past there was a pretty detailed listing/description on acceptable and unacceptable yaks and canoes... I recall that acceptable included whitewater-specific SOTs, like the Dagger Torrent 10.1. I don't see the long descriptor anymore, just a note that rec boats (obviously) and sit-on-tops are not appropriate.

We were thinking about taking WW school and bringing the Torrents. What say the gatekeepers? If not, we'll outfit an appropriate canoe with airbags and switch to tandem canoe, I think.

Hi there,

There's an email hyperlink to the School Director on the boat type and equipment page. Your best bet would be to email the School Director to confirm. They are not necessarily monitoring the message board which is why it's best to shoot them an email.

thanks so much. That's exactly what I did (reading instructions... never a strength of mine) :) and indeed Torrents are no longer acceptable for whitewater school.

We'll regroup on our end and consider the tandem canoe route but our canoe experience in moving water is limited to very mellow Class I rivers. We went to rec school last year in kayaks but haven't had formal moving water instruction in the canoe yet (we are doing a weeklong school at NOC at the beginning of June).

Query: assuming we get out some with one of the ACA certified instructors from the club a few times between now and early May, would it be appropriate for us to do the canoe thing (given our limited canoe experience) at WW school?

In my opinion, DEFINITELY sign up with your tandem canoe...even if you do NOT get out with anyone before WW School. You really do not have to have experience to attend...that's what you're there for: to learn! They try to group folks with similar experience because the instructors can then cater their class to their specific group, but it's fine if you have limited experience...just be candid about that on your registration form

You will learn a TON...AND it will really help you prep for your instruction at NOC. Everyone's different, but to really improve your ww paddling skills takes practice, practice, practice and lots of repetition! Once you go through our WW School, you'll be able to use your time at NOC to really build on your foundation. That's going to be a super combination!

thanks for the supportive words! We'll do it. I've always thought that watching tandem canoes well handled in moving water is a thing of beauty, and that's what got us to sign up at NOC in the first place, so I like the idea ...
