OT Ignornance

Post by v rainwater » Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:10 am

I'm so shocked, just had to share this. My 12 yr old has more constitutional
knowledge than the Nazi mayor of Shreveport.

Let's try that again. Hear this douchbag say "when the police pull you over, your rights are suspended" (regardless of lack of a warrant or reasonable cause).

A post about ignorance with the word misspelled "Ignornance". Now that's funny. :poke:

If you actually listen to what he is saying but interchange “your rights are suspended” with something that does not sound so constitutionally objectable than there is nothing wrong with this. This is just an issue of semantics and his phrasing being taken out of context for whatever reason to cast him as some Third Reich reincarnation.

He is correct in what he is trying to convey he just can’t find the right terms. Can he or the Preisdent of the United States legally take you into custody? No. Do you cede some of your natural rights as a citizen when you are stopped by a police offer? Yes.

In fact I think the mayor sounds extremely professional throughout the entirety of his conversation, while this Robert Bailio character bases part of his argument around a hypothetical scenario based on being pulled over by someone impersonating an officer and the potential situation that would occur if he would have to hand over his weapon to this impersonator.

Grow up.

I know a guy from highschool who pulled over lots of people with a blue light, most the time he just took beer or bribes, then one time he pulled over a cop in full uniform headed home from work. Matt, I bet you wished you had the right to walk down the street a few weeks ago coming home from Dickson

make me grow up,

Ryan

Very well pointed and rational rebuttal Spanke. My incident is completely seperate from this, and regardless of how I feel that does not take away from the fact that there is nothing wrong with this incident in Shreveport.

The guy did not even get a ticket for what he was pulled over for, his weapon was returned at the scene, and he said the officer was very professional.

So what exactly is wrong with what the mayor says here? Police stop the guy, presumably for some reason, ask him if he's armed, he says "none of your business", the police take him into custody. Bet the law where he lives specifies that he has to cooperate with a police officer - those laws are meant to protect the safety of the officer and others. If you don't like it, move somewhere that isn't part of the law. More power to you. But if I tell a policeman that it's none of his business when he asks me if I have a weapon, I expect he's damn sure not going to say, "OK, great, have a nice day" and send me on my way. Doesn't any halfway sane person expect that in this country?

The mayor is being more than patient with this guy on the phone. The mayor is wrong about one thing tho. The police don't take away all of the guy's rights if he pulls a bunch of crap with them. In this country you still have the right to not talk and incriminate yourself, the right to a trial by your peers, a right to be informed of the crime of which you are accused, and the right to defend yourself in court (and even to a free attorney). More than you get in many places in the world. Try telling the police in Nigeria or even China that it's none of their business if you have a weapon, and see what your rights look like there!

Matt sez (misspelled that too)

Wrong! Haven't you heard of the Patriot Act? Your president can lock you up indefinately without a trial. But, don't worry your government is in control, go back to sleep, just do what they say and don't get out of line.

How about these peacefull student protesters at the recent G20? Many of those arrested were not even protesting.

Think you have 1st amenment rights, think again. It's time to end the police state and police ourselves.

Yeah, we've got it real bad here in the U.S. Everybody can plainly see that we live in a repressive, fascist, police dictatorship. It's hard to fathom why trying to govern 270 million people in a way that gives them more individual freedoms than pretty much any other nation on the planet is such a hard thing to do and requires any laws or police powers. It's about time we rose up and overthrew our government. I'm confident that whoever emerges from that civil war and establishes a new government will do a much better job of it than has been done so far...

Or maybe there are real problems we need to be dealing with rather than worrying about some guy's right to tell the police to shove it when they ask if he's got a gun (and then, when he gives them crap about it, they don't arrest him and they return his gun to him in the end)? I dunno, like maybe how much money we owe to China or whether some guy in I-hate-the-US-istan has a nuclear weapon with our names on it?

Just sayin,
Fish

Yeah I am sure the president could have you arrested, but there is still a distinction, like the mayor is making, between him physically taking you into custody and having you arrested.

I am not really one of those "love it or leave it" types and to each his own, but there is not some vast government conspiracy to subdue the masses or rule this country behind the veil of democracy in the name of a totalitarian government.

What I do think there is though are a growing number of uneducated Americans with a greater access to this great disseminator of information that through their own malaise and discontent, with their own situations, making unfounded and ridiculous claims because they watched some video on YouTube or read some column by a guy with the real “inside” details.
