Sunday/Fall Colors/Rec Boating

Post by lalyle » Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:49 am

I need to get out and relax among the colors and smells of Fall. What better way to do that than on a stream? Who's up for some leisurely sightseeing tomorrow? Any recommendations for the best scenery?

Lee,

We're thinking about some part of the Upper Caddo tomorrow. I'll post more later this evening. For planning purposes, we usually meet at Caddo River Canoe ,on the downstream side of the Hwy. 70 Glenwood bridge. Probably about 10:30 to decide and set shuttle. The Caddo should be about 7' or a tad less in the morning.

Best Regards
Jim

Yes, we're still on for the Caddo, tomorrow, Sunday morning, 10:30 at the Glenwood bridge. Bring lunch, and be sure and set your clocks back one hour before turning in this evening :)

Best Regards
Jim

P.S. If coming, please post by 8am if you would so I know if we have a shuttle, or need to bring an extra vehicle. Thanks.

Jim, it looks like I'll be there with the rec boat on the Corolla. Should be a perfect day.

Jim:

What section of the UpCad are you thinking you'll do? Put-in at Norman perhaps?

What a great float down the cool Caddo today! As always, it was delightful to paddle with Jim, Marlo and Gary. Sorry Karla wasn't up to being on the water, but grateful for her shuttle service. Aquagirl and I brought our friend Russel along and enjoyed going downriver for our first time with Ed, Lee and Scott. We made a nice floatilla of 7 kayaks and 2 canoes. I think the river level was about 6.5' which was moving well but probably washed over some potential play spots. The foliage was somewhat past peak colors, but was pretty in the abundant sunshine. We got off the river before that sun got too low in the sky this first day back on standard time. Happy to report our group went without any swimmers in the cool H2O, although one of our party did execute a rather sudden stand-to-sit manuever in water a bit too shallow. No apparent injuries were sustained. Good to be back on the water; it had been too long without floating for me.

Thanks for the report Dave! We too had just a very nice float yesterday!
It was good to see old friends and make new ones, I enjoyed meeting you Russel and Scott.
Dave, I'll try and send some of the shots Marlo and I made yesterday to share with Russel. Scott, sorry I didn't get any contact information from you but if you read this post, and would care to see the shots I made of you along the way, please drop me a email or PM and I'll send them on.
In another post, Lee mentioned the strainers we negotiated yesterday. This section does seem to always have the potential for more wood in the river than the lower sections but yesterday there were several trees to scrape by or portage. I'll echo Lee's advice to use caution.
The Fall colors were pretty nice yesterday, and I think that deep blue sky just made everything better. Toward the end of our trip we even saw and photographed a very cooperative Eagle perched in a tree just below the Swinging Bridge. It was a very good day, thanks again to you all for your companionship!

Best Regards
Jim
