I think "Geezer boater" is an appropriate term for those old guys.

But only if based on the 6:30 AM reading, river falling, with an estimated launch time of 11:38 from the sloped smooth rock river left, downstream edge of the Ed Banks Bridge...

Cowper, that is too much info, he only asked what we thought was the ideal level for a first timer. Nothing about any of the other conditions.

My reply, may appear to be smart a**, but it actually was a loose tribute to ole Cossatot Bob. The only person I know who would argue with an electronic gauge that is was wrong.

One day, unloaded at Ed Banks after having just called the gauge at the top of the hill, I walked up to Bob and said “hey, how are you? Great level, 4.5ft.” Reply I got was “no, no, not really 4.5ft. See that crack in the concrete, that’s the 4.34 level. Maybe 4.34 and a half, but not 5ft”

With the gauge several miles up-stream of this put-in, I know that 4.5 one day may not be the same 4.5 another day, but WOW, Bob operated on his own measuring system, that went in ½ inch increments. I said Ok and had a great day paddling with him and harassing him in his long boat with my short boat.

Bob was better than a gauge and ahead of his day with the long boat. I think about him every time I'm on the river.

I like the 4.34 and a half.
