Mulberry Sunday?

Post by David Lewis » Thu Oct 08, 2009 2:02 pm

I live in Little Rock, but will be in Fayetteville until Sunday morning. Taking the Pig Trail home, I'll be crossing right over the Mulberry. Assuming the water is somewhere between not there at all and deadly (for moderate-level paddlers like me), I'd sure like to do a run. Anyone else?

I'm thinking High Bank to Whoop & Holler, but only because I've done that run a couple of times before. Am open to suggestions.

My internet access will be spotty between noon Friday and Monday, but I can be reached by cell at 501-three five one - 3456.

Thanks, Victor. Let's see how it goes. There may be a great deal of rain in that area between now and Friday night, according to a source I trust at the National Weather Service.

Okay, Taos. Let's see how the level looks. If it's a little hairy, this may not be the best time to step into a kayak for the first time. Personally, I have a little to teach and a lot to learn and have no WW rescue training. You do have a skirt, good PFD and helmet, yes? Is your new kayak a WW boat, rec boat, or what?

BTW, I see that the Mulberry is at 2.7 this morning and rising, which the local guide describes as " Many rapids are at their best in this range. Pools are moving. Too much water for the unprepared."

Given the moderate but widespread rain in the Mulberry watershed I'd expect it to continue rising throughout most of today.

Cool. Hey, Brad, come join us Sunday. And, by the way, you know that river and you've seen me paddle. If you think at any point I'm getting in over my head, so to speak, I'll listen.

I'm posting this for Davis Lewis as he does not have internet service right now. His plans have changed; the Mulberry trip has been aborted.

Due to river changes from flooding the last couple of years take the Turner Bend guide for river levels and had half a foot to it. That'll get it more accurate. At two foot you're dragging bottom for half of your trip. Just a little info for newcomers.
Aw! It's just rocks and water! What could go wrong?
