Best source for fall foliage info
Best source for fall foliage info
I am trying to time my next Buffalo adventure to the leaves turning, as I live a ways off, can only come once this month, and will need to put in a little ahead for a couple days off. What's a good source for local info?
Thanks,
Leigh

People what live up there... outfitters? folks in Fayetville area?? Harrison??
I am only about 30 miles north of Conway and travel up into the first few hills. We have color starting but not big time yet. You can find average time, but it varies some weeks either way.

Re: Best source for fall foliage info
I am in Harrison (home) on the weekends and Texarkana during the week. I have really not seen much turning just yet. It seems like their was a AR map or chart a year or two back on this site that someone had made a link.....I had forgot about it until yesterday??? Tim Ernst website journal http://www.cloudland.net/currentjournal.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is very helpful...he is usually out and about and should give you a general idea.

We live in Oklahoma but get over in the Jasper area every year for the colors. Our experence has been middle of October is best. I think they are calling for a frost this coming weekend. Watch the temps.
Re: Best source for fall foliage info
That may be right.
And a frost for sure kick starts it. Last year Clinton area had lots of fading and yellow but a few cold and dry nights and wham .. color exploded and was gone in a week.

FWIW, I was on Woolum to Gilbert last weekend and with the cool temps you could tell that it was going to pop early this year, and then a very cool forecast for this weekend, I think the 17th through the 24th are lining up to be primo and am also planning a leaf peeping float.
Re: Best source for fall foliage info
Thanks all, I was shooting for the weekend of the 24th. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Thanks Mike,
I actually do have Tim's website bookmarked, I will pull it up. I bet his journal would keep me posted. I also just bought his Buffalo Hiking trails book to go along with my Ken Smith books and my Trail Illustrated maps.
I'm ready to go
I just read a snippet from his journal "I made a sweep thru Boxley Valley this morning..." Ohhhhh I'm so jealous....
Just in case some of you aren't already aware
you guys are so blessed! I know I'm preaching to the choir! I grew up with the Texas Hill Country in my backyard and the Gulf of Mexico not far, so I can't complain, but the Buffalo is so amazing.
Thank you Mr.Compton et al.

Ken will be doing trail work Oct 16-31 if anyone is interested in constructing new sections of the Buffalo River Trail.

http://www.arkansas.com/calendar/fall_foliage_pg1.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/ ... rom=ff_reg_" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The first link gives info based on 'typical years', but I wouldn't trust that as it could easily be off by a couple of weeks. Use that for a "general" idea of when to go. Then finalize your dates (if you can wait until the last minute based on giving your boss a "general" idea of when you will want off) by using the weather channel maps (second link).

It's not much on the prediction end of things but you can take a look at the progress day-by-day and decide if you want to head out in a few more days or not.

Re: Best source for fall foliage info
Thank you David Mac for posting the NFS site. It is one of only 17 sites in the US to have this. It has historical info as well. A great site. I have added it to my Buffalo River spreadsheet.
