Race for the Cure (Paddle for the Cure) (Sat October 17)
Is it true that some of the club members paddle during the Race for the Cure? Is anybody doing it this year? I would love some info on it.

Thanks for putting this one up, guys.
Wish I were going to be home for this one. This is important to me and I'd definitely make the trip down.

Once again, the Arkansas Boathouse Club is sponsoring Brunch at the ABC facility at the take-out ramp just downstream of the Interstate Bridge on the NLR shore for all Paddle for the Cure volunteers and for all Row for the Cure and Erg for the Cure participants and for friends and shuttle... uh... Gods & Godesses of all. Food, drink & facilities... If you want, please feel free to drop by before, during or after the Race for the Cure!!! You will be welcome!
Thanks!

Which boat-ramp at Burns Park - my L.R. map indicates two - upper, or lower?

Bob,
I'm not involved with the float but did want to speak to the boat ramp question. Marlo and I have ridden the NLR bike trail from the Broadway Bridge to Cooks landing on several occasions (seven miles)and I remember one boat ramp in Burns Park about three miles upstream from the Broadway bridge. It was right by the Burns Park Golf course. The only other boat ramp I remembered was at Cooks landing (Murray Lock and Dam facility).

Jim it's no big deal, both boat ramps are on Burns Park at the edge of the Golf Course about 1/3 of a mile apart according to my L.R. map. I'm sure that if the first ramp is not in use, it would be the second, the road runs by both -- one may have fallen into disuse.

You would have to use the boat ramp at Burns park. Cooks landing ramp puts you above the lock and dam

Bob,
Today seemed a little cold and dreary for me to get really set on floating, so we instead rode bikes back along the NLR trail I mentioned earlier. You were correct, there are two paved boat ramps in the vicinity of Burns Park. We were riding upstream from the I-30 bridge and the first one is located just as we got to the Burns Park property, just as the golf course begins to be seen along the trail. The second ramp is about a mile or so further on, past the golf course and just as you get into the Burns Park proper i.e. the rest of the park land that is playing fields, dog park, pavilions, picnic tables, etc.
We had a good afternoon, I really like this ride, especially the scenic 'Big Rock' quarry portion. I will look forward to kayaking more this Fall but hope for a more sunny day :)
Best regards
Jim

The second boat ramp you talking about is just to the ski lake unless there is one I don`t know about.
The river is flowing at about 180,000 right now and don`t think I would get on it at this time, My stopping point is about 100,000 and that is still pretty swift.

Even if the water's too high to paddle or row on Saturday, the Arkansas Boathouse Club will still be putting on breakfast for all paddlers, 3-mile-men and shuttle drivers who would care to stop by, visit, and see the rowing club facility and yard full of skinny boats! We'll be there from about 7:30 a.m. until a good while after the race! The facility is at the boat-ramp just below the Interstate Bridge on the NLR side (river left). You'll be welcome!!

True, that second ramp only launches into the lake used by the ski club with no outlet to the river. I'm itching to paddle, but that river's pushy right now, probably to the point of small craft advisories, if not warnings.
If you're in the NLR riverfront area, come up about four blocks to the Argenta Farmer's Market on Main. There's going to be a food festival in addition to the usual fresh produce, honey, and pastries sold there on Saturday mornings.

We did it, Tracy and I. She left her bike at the take out to pedel back to her truck. The river flow was down some but still fast. We saw the race start. I was still upriver but could see them run. I did not have my big anchor rigged and could not stop. Tracy held her own with the current for a while.
The breakfast was excellent. Thanks Mike.
