Decent Hotel in Hot Springs

Post by DMG » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:13 am

Wife, kid, and I are planning to spend a night in Hot Springs on the way to Houston next month. Other than making the hadj to Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters and possibly splashing around in a lake, we're probably not going to have time for much outdoorsy stuff. What we'll be looking for the most is a restorative crash in a comfortable room. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel for us? We don't need lots of amenities but don't mind paying for a clean room. Thanks in advance!

IMO motels are somewhat pricey in the Hot Springs area. Last spring I was looking for a "cheap" motel in the area and stayed at the Knights Inn just east of town, very close to Magic Springs. It's very basic, no frills, outside of town, but seemed to be one of the more affordable places.

The Baymont on the Lake is nice...Hwy 7 south heading towards Bismark, Arkadelphia, etc...It would put you near the lake and some restaurants like Fisherman's Warf, then on your way out, just take 7 S and hook up with I30 in Caddo Valley. $0.02.

If the Knights Inn is the one I'm thinking of, they used to have hot tubs in some of the rooms. I don't mean a Jacuzzi style bathtub, I mean an actual hot tub...right in the room. It's really close to magic springs, so I'm thinking it might be the same one mentioned earlier. If not, it's some hotel in the same general vicinity...right off 70 as you come into hot springs.

Stay away from the Arlington! I stayed there for 3 days in April while I was in town for the SkillsUSA state competition. There was about 12 guys in my group, and about half of us were miserable by the end of it. The rooms are musty, and chock full of heaven knows what allergens and irritants. Scott P. was sick with bronchitis for 2 weeks afterward. I had an awful reaction, too. The A/C unit in my room didn't work either.
I know its "Historic" but to me the history was far outdone by the unpleasant stay I had. On the bright side, the hot springs hillside and parks are right across the street from it, and it is within walking distance of just about everything downtown, including bath-house row. The hot springs were pretty cool (hehe), though. Didn't see any gangsters, and I brought home a gold medal for college level Quiz Bowl.
Hot springs is alright, but beware the prices. If you are downtown, get breakfast at a place that I think was called The Pancake Inn...you wont regret it.

Dave you have to check out Galveston, TX. I thought Galveston was going to be like New Orleans..... It blew me away! They have kayaking tours, sail boating, and the biggest water park with a sweet wave maker.
