Question About Ozark Creek Information Summary

Post by mgood » Thu Jul 23, 2009 9:34 pm

I've had a lot of free time lately, and as usual, have been reading old river descriptions over again. I was reading the description of the Tot when I thought- how long has this page been up? I've been using it for years, but I have no idea who made it to begin with (THANK YOU whoever that was- you've made my life a lot better). Whoever still manages it- would it be possible to update the river description (say to include the rocks moving at Roadblock on Richland or the pin recently in the Esses)? I'd say that some valuable knowledge has been gained since the original page began, and it may be time to update. Just a thought.

I believe Bill Herring (aka Fish) started the page. You could probably PM him about changes and he might update it for ya.

Yes Bill owns and maintains the page.
He has had it up and running for many years. (10+ maybe?)
He will add or modify descriptions when necessary.
If you have a suggestion, write it up just as you think it should appear
and e-mail it to him. He might upload your additions.
The photo pages could use some updating as well,
we could all show our support for the page by reading it and sending him
our updates.
I have told kayakers from other areas about the page and they are
amazed at the ease of use and functionality of the page.
Thanks Bill.
Fighting for peace........
Isn't that like screaming for quiet?

Bill Herring started it at least in 1994 and maybe even 1993. Its a great resource for sure with over 15 years of ozark paddling history recorded

I've been admiring the information density and crisp organization of Fish's Gauge Page for more than a year now. As I read it, I contemplate how much human effort by how many people it must have taken to create it. Not just the programming and typing effort, but the effort of summertime hikes up tick-filled draws just to see if the unnamed stack of L-shaped contour lines someone found on some topo map might be runnable if enough rain hit the exact right spot. Pioneering all these crazy creeks is hard work. I'm definitely not the creeker personality type, but if I ever do try a few just to get a taste, it will be because Bill and a bunch of other people made them accessible to me. I don't have the drive, dedication, or guts to find them myself.

So a big thanks! Thanks to everyone who shares what they know about these creeks: the barbed-wire fences, the rebar, the shallow landings, the must-make eddies. Thanks also to Bill, for compiling all this information in one utterly useable place. OzarkPages is the Platonic ideal of web site.

I raise my glass.
"...a light falling sound, as of grains of sand being sprinkled from a window overhead, gradually spreading, intensifying, acquiring a regular rhythm, becoming fluid, sonorous, musical, immeasurable, universal: it was the rain." --Marcel Proust
