river levels

Post by fettsway » Thu Jul 09, 2009 10:38 pm

well, i was wanting to float the Kings again this saturday, but heard it's really low?

I drive over from Oklahoma so I wanted to hear what it's like before making the drive. I usually float from Rockhouse to Trigger Gap.

If Kings is out, any other suggestions that are of similar scenery?

Lower Buffy is still (at 2.9' as of 7:10a.m.) in the upper half of low but floatable 2.0'-3.4'

I just called King's River Outfitters and they say it is really low but floatable if you are willing to get out "maybe 10 times" which is probably not what I'm looking for (like you, I am seeking a weekend float).

Other ideas welcome!

thanks Jaytee. hitting low spots isn't so much of a concern as to the length of the low spot. It's no fun it you have to walk the boat 20 or 30 yards, frequently. To be honest, I spend most of my float in the water hanging onto the side of the boat. It's much cooler in the water.

I know the lower Ouachita river isn't even in the same section of the state as the other suggestions but, for a very nice five mile afternoon float, you can't beat the Remmel Dam to Rockport float with it's cold water released from Lake Catherine. Several of us will be making this trip tomorrow, details on another post.
For a weekend or two day trip, one could paddle the 16+ mile trip from Grigsby Ford put-in to the Hwy 67 access near Donaldson. There is also the 13 mile trip from Hwy 67 access to the Hwy 7 access at Arkadelphia. Both of these sections are a little slower and without the mountain&bluff scenery of the Remmel float but both do have some pretty nice woods& pastorial scenery, also both have some large gravel bars along that could serve as camps. The water released from the dam will help some on these two floats but it may be fairly late in the afternoon the further downstream you go.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim, can you point me to the other post with this info about your 6 mile float? I am about 4 hours away, but would like to entertain the idea of doing this someday, doubt it will be tomorrow. I don't think I have ever been to that area of the state and don't really know where anything is. Do you guys have a shuttle worked already?

Fettsway,

The post is on this same Rec. page and titled; Remmell Dam to Rockport Float July 11 or 12th.
As for tomorrow, yes we have enough folks coming along that we will have the shuttle taken care of. That should be largely the case for the many weekend floats sure to come there. You'd certainly be welcome to join in tomorrow or anytime you see a post about this trip. If you can't make it tomorrow, then maybe you can plan to attend the Surf&Turf there in a couple of weekends with the added benefit of the ACC sponsered cook-out. At the Surf&Turf, there will be many folks just hanging out at The Ledge 'surfing' all day as well as a large number of us making an impromptu float(s) from the dam back down to the Ledge.
I don't know where in Oklahoma you live but in southeast or east central parts, the drive down 71 from Ft. Smith to Y City, then on east on 270 to Hot Springs& Malvern may be shortest and certainly scenic.

Best Regards
Jim

thanks Jim. I found the other post. Given my away distance I might plan coming down there during the ACC cookout event to check things out. I am in the Tulsa area so I40 to Fort Smith is the best way that far.

I'm sure it's too far but the Current River in Missouri runs year 'round because it's Spring Fed.

The north fork of the White river in Missouri may be floatable. On your way to the Current you cross the Eleven Point. Also a nice spring fed river with some beautiful springs. And before you get to the Eleven Point you pass the Spring River in Arkansas.
