Meeting programs.

Post by David Mac » Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:53 pm

If anybody has something they'd like to see as a program at Central Chapter meetings let me know and I'll see what I can set up. If anybody has a program they'd like to present Just let me know when. I don't have the kinds of easy connections that the previous president did, but I can certainly work at making them if I know what people want to see.

Since you asked!!! :)

1. In the Fall do a cold weather paddling style show. Invite O.O.O. and Ozark Outdoors to coordinate it.

2. Have club tightwad Mike Coogan do a presentation on inexpensive paddling apparel. He has done it before and it was good.

3. Have member Shelby Johnson do a presentation on river watersheds. He works for the State in some mapping area or something and has access to all sorts of data that is interesting regarding rainfall and watersheds.

4. Have a ranger from Cossatot come for a presentation on activities around there.

5. Ditto Ozark National Forest Rep and/or Ouachita National Forest

6. Contact the city's Park and Rec guy and have him come and talk about the Fourche Creek Canoe trail.

7. Have someone very tech savy do a presentation on online paddling resources that are available. Bill Herring comes to mind but I think he is now in Kansas City. (might check to see if Oyster Bar has a wireless hot spot)

8. Invite member Tom Kennon to come and talk about how he came to write his various editions of his Ozark Whitwater book.

9. Invite Tom Burroughs down for an ACC Town Hall Meeting to discuss club issues and activities.

10. Get real creative or recruit someone else to and have them spoof a gameshow. I did one called the "Paddlers Newlywed Game" a few times over the past couple of years. Once this presentation is "in the can" it is ready in case you have a last minute cancellation.

11. Contact the President of the Ozark Society or just join them and steal ideas from them. Surely they have some programs that would work well for our group.

12. Have ACC Board Members and ACA SWR Trainer Walter Felton do a 30 minute talk on River Safety. Tell him to limit it to very specific aspects such as "How to prepare to avoid accidents" OR "Worst Case Scenarios...what now"

13. Have some of our Rubber boaters (Stewart Nowland, Larry Crane, Walter Felton, Marcell Jones Etc etc) do a presentation on Rafting. (this group has grown a lot in the past decade and I think has room for more growth)

14. Have a doctor, a nurse or Red Cross Rep do a Min CPR class. They may not do this since they would not be able to "certify" anyone in such a short time but I would think it would not hurt to ask.

15. Trip Report photo presentations are good if they are truly exotic and if the photos are excellent. Grand Canyon, Selway, Middle Fork, Mexico Rivers, Futalafu, Europen paddling trips etc. Please give the presenters a strict time limit!!!

16. Have a photo expert do a presentation on River and Action photography.

17. Have a panel of REAL ACC old geezers do a discussion regarding the creation of the ACC. Bring in rocking chairs for them to sit in!!! Seriously!!

18. Invite outfitters to come and discuss the business of running an outfitter store. You might be surprised at what you learn.

That should do you for most of your term :) cuz I figure some topical stuff will present itself now and then. :) You don't need connections. Just be creative and don't be afraid to pick up the phone and ask!!

My work here is done!!!

I have to admit, if some of Gordon's ideas were used I would start coming to meetings.

As a new paddler, many of those are attractive to me. To an experienced boater they might not be.

Here's another one that was suggested to me. Recruit one or two real life river guides to talk about the ups and downs of being a Real Professional River Rat.

Excellent input, Gordon, I wonder why you did not get a response?

I think we may have the old geezers session this month. That way we can ask them why none of the chapters except NW seem to have chapter bylaws....at least none that any of us younger people know about.

Seriously, some of these ideas are in the works. I'm hoping to have a program for the end of July meeting.

Excellent list, Gordon. As a chapter we need to remember the breadth of experience and interests represented at any meeting. No way to hit everybody every time, but just keep it in mind. '

We're not all steep-creekers or Class IV boaters. To grow the club we have to make all paddlers, regardless of how many blades they use or whether they sit or kneel feel welcome and go home with some usefull information.

Thanks to David for taking on a challenging task for free.
