Canoeing in July
Canoeing in July
I was wondering if there was any decent canoeing in July in Arkansas or maybe Oklahoma. I know Mulberry is too low but what about the Buffalo?
Re: Canoeing in July
Buffalo from 65 down is probably doable w/o looking at gauges. Was up there mid-week and they were putting in at Pruitt but it was low, low, low. Looked at Hasty and Carver but due to distances from outfitters, I would stay with the above. Rockport is releasing for some time in the pm which gives you the Remmel to Ledge run. Also, the Spring runs year round up in NE Arkansas.

Down around buffalo point runs pretty much all year unless it's a really bad drought. And there are several outfitters right there so that's not a problem either. Regardless of what others may try to tell you.

The Spring and Rockport are the two obvious ones but there are other options worth considering. Missouri has the Eleven Point, North Fork of the White River and the Current that are good this time of year.
Two that go under the radar are:
80 miles on the White River from Bull Shoals to Allison (Mt View). My favorite section is Norfork to Allison. (30 miles) It makes for a very leisurely float with good water. Excellent trout fishing. I make a two night camping experience out of it. You can also do shorter day trips.
Lake Ouachita is a great place to paddle. I like the north side. Its closer for me and lots of primitive island or shoreline camping options.
You might be surprised to know that the Arkansas River provides some great canoeing as well.
These are all class I water. Just the same, be careful.
