War Eagle Creek info

Post by fettsway » Tue Jun 23, 2009 7:00 pm

decades ago my dad fished from the War Eagle Creek banks and loved the fishing. Is this creek capable of offering a float trip? I rec kayak, no river runner/white water. So having a slow nice float with good fishing and swimming would be welcomed. But have not idea about this place, put ins, shuttle options, etc?

thanks.

we float from a low water bridge on 303 north, off of 412. to the war eagle mill... do a google map, or msn live search .... you also can get on at 412 hwy near Huntsville and float to the park .

I've floated it before. Very nice! We put in up on 412 like Painterbob says and took out at the park, that being Withrow Springs State Park. You can give them a call and they can give you some info.

The park is not actually on War Eagle Creek. It is close by... couple of miles. I didn't care for the park personally. Nice swimming pool. First rate bathhouse in the newer section. But the highway runs through the park. Some campsites are only 25 yards or so from highway. If your in a camper it probably wouldn't be too bad. But in a tent like we were... let's just say I hope your an early riser if you plan on camping there. Apparently a bunch of people around there have to be at work at 6 a.m.

I understand what you mean, the sound of traffic does not make me feel like i have gotten away.

I was hoping for a park/outfitter to shuttle me up the creek, then I could float down to my truck. I will be by myself, so I have to work that out.

The park has some property on the creek. I'd still call and ask. They sometimes offer shuttles. I'm not sure if you would have to use thier boats, however. You're best bet would be to call and talk to Daniel. He'll tell ya if you can get a shuttle from them or not.

i called the park and spoke with Daniel. Very nice person. But the park no longer shuttles people or their boats. So I need to figure something else out.

What public access points are there for War Eagle Creek? We drove over it one day, but there was not any access to the creek. I would at least like to hit some public access points on the creek and check it out further.

thanks.

:( ....that one has a big lock on the new gate, next to the hwy.! and you can't go very far up stream from that point it's" tiny creek like" there is a ford crossing if you drive down the road along ANDERSON'S gas station... now up stream from hwy 412 near Huntsville the second bridge. has some( wire XXXX across) it in a few spots... " buddy" from the news paper did a float on all of it.last year, i think? and he made it sound like it wasn't friendly waters on the upper end to mid section of that . ???? or, you just looking for some self shuttle stuff ?

during any float, i certainly want to avoid unfriendly waters no matter what.

It looks like I won't find any shuttle options so I am hoping to find some access points where I can drive my truck to the water and fish from the bank.

There is a pull off on Highway 23. You see some red and white signs. I beleive it is the head of the war eagle trail or something like that. Some of the signs have 5 numbers (I think it's 5) on them. Those are addresses for the park. That area has creek access and it's where I've taken out my kayak.
