Jackson super fun??

Post by hdh » Wed May 13, 2009 5:38 pm

Ok.. I'm 6'1" 245 31" inseam (short legs). When I put the seat foward the front dives , when I move it back, can't get the happy feet tight enough. Thinking about building a bulkhead . I have tried a 2L coke bottle behind the happy feet (felt better still not tight enough). Any suggestion or instructions on how to build a bulkhead..

more beans in this one.

Kind of pricey for a bulk head though. Grab some foam and start cutting I guess

Got one (a bulk head) I used in my 4fun. Want to check it out, come paddle this weekend.

Hey Harlan,

I needed to add a bulkhead to my 4Fun - should be the same basic idea. Here's pics of the general shape I made it. The notch is for where it fits in behind/in front of the pillar. I put mine in and still used the happy feet - basically I used the beads to hold the foam in place, and I can still use the air bladder to make small adjustments in the bulkhead placement - enough to add air for a tighter fit when I'm in shorts, vs. let air out to make more room when I've got more layers on or wearing heavier shoes. I can't remember if I also had to add some foam to the very front of the bow too...I think I did, but can't recall.

You might need something slightly different as I have pretty small feet, but maybe this gives ya some ideas...

Hey Heather, what is the "foot pad" you have on the the floor there? It looks like a seat pad modified for a foot pad. I have minicell for my foot pad. I have already worn holes in it and I have been in my yak twice on the lake. Thanks!!

Hey Brandon -

Those are "PADZ" - they are a thin durable minicell with adhesive back. They make "Ankle PADZ" which are 2 sheets to put there under your heels/ankle area, but they also make the "Seat PADZ" which is the same stuff only seat shaped. If I can't find the ankle one, I'll just buy the seat PADZ and cut it half and use half on each side (which I think is what is in that boat in the pic).

For my other boat I couldn't find the PADZ locally and ended up just using some thin foam and yeah, it's already all chewed up and worn through. I need to peel the remnants off and use this PADZ stuff because it's really durable and holds up for years - the other foam was a waste. I think I had worn holes in it just getting in and out of the boat in the house while I was tweaking my outfitting. :?

Don't underestimate how comfy that little bit of foam makes it under your heel...it really makes a difference!!! :D

Cheers,
Heather

Here's a bump for any new Jackson owners with short legs. I vaguely remembered this thread, Lupe's contribution in particular, and thought it might be as useful to someone else as it was to me. I paddled Lupe's 4Fun at Canoe School and have had 4Fun lust ever since. I was admiring her adjustable footblock at the time, but my piano legs still wouldn't reach it (Female paddlers, without exception, are all taller and more elegant than me). Anyway, I finally came across one of the 4FUN classic models with linear plastic (lots of linear plastic. The thing is a tank!) and the cheaper outfitting. I love the simplified seat but the footblock was too small to even come close to fitting my 29" inseam. Fortunately, I happened to have some Happy Feet (the largest "150" size) in my Dagger ID. Following Heather's inspiration, I glued the three pieces of the block together (Obviously you could use a fresh block of foam if you had an Elite model with the Happy Feet). I trimmed the curved profile just a bit to make it more compact and cut away quite a bit of material from the front of the block to make room for all the extra beads. I trimmed bit by bit until it would just jamb into the bow with the bag deflated and my knees slightly straightened. I also left some protrusions on the front of the foam block thinking that it would further limit side-to-side motion of the block, which it seems to. The last step was to cut the front pillar to allow enough rearward clearance for the footblock. The setup is rock solid! I get just enough block travel to adjust for different layering and boot sizes and it pumps up super tight!

Nothing new here, but perhaps a very slight refinement of someone else's great idea. Just bringing it back to the front for someone who might not of seen this yet. Thanks, Lupe!

Cool, Dave! Welcome to the 4Fun Club! Glad you got the bulkhead+happy feet combo to work so well - your set up looks great.

And I concur: Harlan, sell that boat to Louis!!!! Louis, I think I still owe you rolling lessons from like 2-3 years ago!!! We need to get you in a SuperFun so I can get you rolling!!!!
