Opinion of Mohawk Saddle & Thigh Retainer System?

Post by Eztouche » Thu Dec 25, 2008 5:58 pm

I have a Dagger Genesis and am thinking of installing a Mohawk saddle and thigh retainer system. Does anyone have experience with this setup?
Thanks

That is a lot like what was in my Genesis. No complaints till the day one of the plastic buckles snapped while I was leaning on a wave. :hammer: :little splash icon: :guy swimming icon:
You sure this is on the right channel?

I'm too thrilled with my Mohawk lap belt, either.

I've got the mohawk set up in my probe, and I just can't seem to get it right. I am thinking about either changing the whole thing, or adding a couple of inches of height to the saddle and moving the foot pegs back.

Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be a Mike Yee system if you want straps or Beluga Appaloosa saddle if you want a bulkhead saddle with foam thigh hooks. OR you could buy the foam and make your own bulkhead saddle.

I just took that thigh pad off of my rig. Its much better with just the belt.

I've tried single lap belts in the past in my C1 and C2 when I paddled decked C boats and didn't like them. They did not hold me in as securely as a single strap on each thigh system did and I needed that extra support to hang in there long enough to roll. I never had any problem getting out in time with single strap for each thigh system. Might think different if I had ever gotten hung up by one leg. Different strokes for different folks. I liked the look of the Mike Yee and other double strap systems, particularly the suspended systems, but figured that clutzy me would be that much more likely to get hung up somehow with more and narrower straps when (not if) I or my bow partner have to swim. What ever floats your boat.....

I went with the wide padded thigh straps from Northern Water Paddle Sports Equipment for both saddles in the Howler. (http://www.northwater.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) Also got the multiple position anchors from them. May get their toe blocks someday, but I am going to experiment with some glued in ankle rolls first, thinking that they will be lighter and less likely to have to be adjusted depending on my footwear winter to summer. Also going to glue in new foam kneeblocks and foam on the floor first dry weather we get. Applied three coats of Tung oil to the gunnels earlier this week will reapply some more when it gets dry and warm again. Don't know when I will get to use them with my neck being the way it is, but I will post when i do. Been a long time since I was in that narrow a canoe. Expect carnage and short trips at first when I finally do get it on the water.

the mohawk rig will hold you in the boat fine but you will have much better boat control using ind. leg straps close to the knee. lifting the knee say, 4", will mean lifting the upper thigh only 1" or so and less boat lean for the same leg movement

I have the Mohawk double strap in my Dagger Rival. I moved the setup back toward me from the directions and added some shims to the knee area. Easy to use, holds me in place during a roll, and positive escape for an exit. Have standard double strap setup in my other boat, good also but more stuff swirling around if swimming
