GIS creekfinder/ video clips needed

Post by Itchy » Sun Apr 26, 2009 12:14 pm

Howdy howdy, yall.

In the latest and weeniest version of my vicarious kayaking habit, I am developing a technique for finding the optimal creek or river in a given area with space-age GIS technology. The process involves calculating streams and stream gradient from a DEM, delineating their watersheds and inputting precipitation rasters over the flow accumulation raster to accurately reflect water input, and then making a model that can take into account various factors-- gradient, streamflow, run length, land cover, geology, road access, etc., to find the best streams given certain preferences. I'm using PRISM mean annual precip data currently, but if one wanted, she could could use snowpack stuff layers for out west, or even the storm total precipitation KML from weather.gov to find the best creek on a given day; although I'm not sure anyone is going to do an hour and a half of GIS before going creeking... I'm doing this for Arkansas because I know it fairly well, and I will share the results once it's completed, and if I have a compact and functional model by the end of it, I'll check on KU's intellectual property laws and make it publicly available if possible. I don't know how many folks here have access to ArcMap, but certainly some of you do.

However, I am presenting the preliminary results to my GIS class on Wednesday, and I would like to have some short (i.e. one person running one rapid per clip) Arkansas videos to put in there, to illustrate what creeking is versus big water (any Tot at 6+ feet footage around?) versus playboating, etc. These people are Kansans and haven't really been exposed to this sort of thing before. And yes, I am trying to impress a girl in the class, so clips of me would be pretty awesome, as I have none. But I think Brogard might be the only person who does, and apparently the Intraweb hasn't made it to Stuttgart yet, so he can't help me. Anyways, if anyone is willing to share any clips or knows where I can download some, it'd be awesome--I'll certainly give credit to boaters/cinematographers. I have about a gig of server space that anyone I give permission to can upload to, so if there are longer segments available, I can snip what I need to. If you can help, please email me at cossatot@gmail.com.

Thanks a bunch and I miss you all.

Hey Itch,

Long time no see, man. I'm up in Kansas City a fair amount these days. We should hook up for a beer or something up in the flatlands somewhere. I know Ryan Center's got some footage of Cossatot at about 7.5 feet in the falls. Also has plenty of creeking stuff. Email or PM me and I'll shoot you his number.
