Coming through Arkansas

Post by mjamja » Wed Apr 22, 2009 11:16 am

I will be coming through Arkansas on May 5 -9 after a week on the Current River in Missouri. Was thinking of doing middle or lower Buffalo (looking for flatwater up to Class II). Even though its mid-week, are there any trips scheduled on Buffalo or other rivers suitable for a relatively inexperienced paddler. Also considering the Cache River Wildlife Refuge or more protected sections of Lake Quachita or DeGrey.

I am paddling a Wenonah Argosy royalex canoe, and my partner is paddling a poly WS Tsunami 140 in case that helps in giving you an idea if your trip might be suitable for us.

Since we are in one car we would like to join a group to save on the shuttle fees and/or avoid upstream paddling.

If you don't get any midweek takers on Buff trips, the lower lake of DeGray (downstream of the main dam) is easily accessed and small enough to paddle around the whole lake in an afternoon. Seldom any boat traffic, so fairly secluded for canoe trip. But that's true of many small impoundments in AR.

If you wanted to do the lower Caddo (below DeGray) and part of the Ouachita down to Arkadelphia, I could likely help you with shuttle.

Hale out of town boaters. I tried to get some info from another club sight to no avail. So, here goes my best attempt. Dragover may be just what you're after. It's on the Ouachita. Pull in, throw your boats out, go park. Short hike back through the woods and put in for a three mile tour.A three mile tour. Get in car. Go home/hotel/tent/crash in the car. I think the links on the front page will give you what you want to know. The Gazeteer has good info too. Post back up if you need more info. Oh yeah-class 2.

The Buffalo is great - one of the most beautiful spots in Arkansas. Considering there are many outfitters along the river renting all sorts of boats to just about anyone you should be fine even if you have to go out with out local boaters along. stephanie
