Decades of paddling kayaks
I purchased a new large Burn when they first came out.
Great boat on the water but I just could not get my roll down in the Burn.
Really worked on the outfitting. Changed the hip pads out and put in hip pads so they would hold my hips in, put in foam side braces to hold my legs in and up on the thigh braces, completely redid the parts of the braces to include a fat strip across the outside to hold me in them.
What this did was make the boat fit me like a glove. All in all it took help from several Burn experts to get the outfitting right.
It was a changed boat with the outfitting. Where I had to be might near perfect in my roll form to get the boat back upright even in flat water, I was soon hitting rolls 100 percent in flat water. The payoff was in Zoom Flume middle section I hit a rock and flipped and the roll was automatic back up in seconds.
The Burn in my opinion is one of the best river runners out there and up in the top creek boats (gotta move into the Rockers, Jefes etc to get the serious creekers in my opinion) . But that bottom flat play section, wide across the knees side section makes it harder to roll. And, in my opinion the factory outfitting at least at the time I got my Burn really sucked. I remember on time in the Burn, I flipped on a creek and actually fell out of the boat with the standard factory outfitting
Number one, at the pool find a RPM and get your roll grooved. Lots of folks complain about these old style boats but man they all roll very easy.
Number two start working on your Burn's outfitting. Get it right and your roll in the Burn will be orders of magnitude easier even combat rolls.
Get some feed back on your roll from a good instructor to go with the personalized Burn outfitting and my bet is your roll gets back on automatic
