If you like rivers, mountains, clean air, fishing, hunting, ski ing, boating, hiking, 4 wheeling, bush planes, mountain biking you name it - Salmon Idaho would be hard to beat.

Great Summers, snowy winters and perfect in between seasons.

Go for it

I knew a surgeon from there and he frequently said he never wanted to live anywhere else. I know I liked it when I visited him and came to paddle. He said the town/county politics can get sort of wild at times, but only about 100 folks ever cared one way or the other. Paddleing, hiking, hunting, and fishing are all great there and I would imagine that the horseback riding opportunties would be good as well. Jobs can be sort of scarce there and tend to be seasonal and cyclical per Walt. He said his patient load was seasonal as well due to the ebb and flow of visitors and that was the reason he could take off on 3 and 4 week vacations and go paddleing everywhere. That was a long time ago though, like 35 years ago, so things might have changed.

I was there a few years back shopping at the local safeway. the manager came out and asked if he could help us shop. told us next time if we would email him the list he would gather the stuff and freeze coolers at no charge and if we needed to pick up after hours to just let him know. I know this is the sign of a good businessman but if that is still the kind of folks living there, sounds good. Some years back I took a bush flight back to Boise from there. The pilot was late back from a back country delivery, but made it up by flying us low and slow back to Boise and showing us all sorts of elk and such. Talked to his wife several times on the two way about canning veggies. He ended up spending the night at Boise at the same cheap motel we were at. Had a airport car and drove us around plus ate dinner with us. Again, he was a person to write stories about. Military pilot, grew up in a cabin as his folks were back country and pilots as well. On another trip, same type of thing from a lady at a local tourist deal. Went out of her way to recommend a great camp spot by the river for us plus telling us of local hot springs etc etc. Again, they love summer tourists there, but every time I have asked a local a question I got treated very well. Same deal on another trip, eating at local watering spots. Only time I heard some complaining was one time hanging out at a local spot when the feds were bringing in wolves. couple of the local ranchers were really pissed about the federal government going againist local wishes. Being suspicious of anything coming out of Washington DC but the military, I can understand that feeling.

If I were a lot younger, I cannot think of a better place to spend a few years having fun than Salmon Idaho.

Eric, the Walt you speak of wouldnt be the legendary Walt Blackadar would it? If so did you get to hear his amazing turnback canyon solo story firsthand?I've always imagined he probably was one  intense fella! One of my favorite legends of whitewater.Loved the analogy of paddling it, (like I was paddling the back of a big ol rattler striking at me from all sides.)Classic stuff!Right up there w/ ol Lars.Seems like I read about Pat Keller, Austin Rathmen, and crew :chicken: ing out of turnback and saying that Walts feat of running it at full flow may never be repeated b/c of all the huge icebergs and the difficulty in general.Pretty impressive to think he sacked up and soloed that sh!t
