LongPool Question
Several of us are coming over from TN next week. I was looking at the board earlier and saw something about some trouble at LongPool but now it looks like the post has been deleted.
I don't want to cause any problems here but was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on what the trouble is without getting anyone banned or the thread deleted? If this information is better done by PM, please feel free to do so.
We're not at all the "trouble causing type" but do enjoy a cold adult beverage now and then.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: LongPool Question
Well you won't be able to legally enjoy that cold brew at Longpool campground. It's my understanding that it is in a dry county/townhip or whatever.
There have been some comments to the effect that the LEO's that cover the campground are somewhat overzealous in their search for such beverages (and other problems I suppose) to the point where even non-drinkers have felt "harrassed" but I'd take those comments with a grain of salt.

Re: LongPool Question
The others have said it well - if it is important to you, camp at a private campground, not Long Pool.
If you feel that a Law Enforcement officer has been overzealous, that is an opinion, and you might be able to state it in a very professional way and not get censored, depending on how you word it. If someone else carries it further, then the whole thread will most likely get deleted, consistent with the Message Board guidelines, which are clearly linked above. I may not like some of the laws, but we are not going to go name-calling on the folks hired to enforce those laws, for basically doing the job they were hired to do.
If you feel that a Law Enforcement officer has harrassed you, then you are accusing someone of commiting a crime (or at the very least violating the standards of conduct that every agency has), and you should be contacting their superiors, or filing charges with the State Police, or filing a lawsuit, or contacting the State Attorney General's office, or something like that. The Canoe Club message board guidelines are NOT going to allow you to put the officers "on trial" here.
I hope that the Canoe Club members who are also Law Enforcement officers are OK with this approach; if not, contact me or better yet, one of the CC Board members via PM and help us better understand YOUR point of view. It's Your Club too.

Re: LongPool Question
OK, I can't take it anymore. Here is what has happened.
I'm going to say about 5 years ago things at Long Pool got pretty bad night. At one time I probably spent 8 to 10 weekends or more a year at long pool. It was a nice quite place you could go and relax a have a few cold one's with friends kick back cook some good food paddle the creek and have a great time.
Then came the advent of Meth, man what a fun killer. So here are a few stories of what I have seen at Long Pool.
Camping one weekend down in section A probably site 4 or 5. I arrived on Thursday so no one was around when I got there. Friday sometime a lady arrived with here two 12 to 14 year old daughters and set up camp next to mine. Later on that night others moved in and a group of 6 arrived and set up camp next to the mother and two daughters. That is when the peace and quite was over. First I like really loud music when it does not bother others. It's called respect not much of it left anymore! Anyway the music came on and the party started. There was a young man in the group that kept repeating YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!! Over and over and over. Every other word out of their mouth was a compound word that starts with M and ends in r and that was the cleanest thing they said. It went on all night and kept everyone up most of it. Confronting this bunch without a firearm was not an option for me. The next morning I got up about 6 and started banging things around, accidentally honked the truck horn, made the dog bark, everything I could think of. I floated that day and when got back to camp they were going strong. I went on that night just like the night before. It was a long weekend.
Next, was camped up in section C or it once was I think it's B now. Lots of rain rained all day and night. The camp next to me had built a tent House while I was out paddling. Big enough to park a jeep under. I was awakened in the middle of the night by a Pick Ax and shovel hitting the ground. I could not see what they were doing because the tarp was all the way around their camp area. The next weekend when I went back I drove up and looked around and found were they had build a dam and dammed up the little creek and made a small pond. Kept me up all night. I'm sure it took a lot of hard work and meth to complete the dam.
Next, Camped down in the high rent district with power thinking maybe it will be little less noise. Wrong, I guess it started about 11 or so that night; dude would get in his old Chevy truck with open headers and drive down every road in the park. On his last tripe about 3 am or so, he went back to camp and played the 15 minute version of Free Bird. After it was over the whole campground erupted in applause. It was great he was quite after that!!
These stories could go on and on and Crank Heads burning their spare tire in the fire ring, pretty good fist fight one night.
So the law had to do something. The problem is if it's fun it's illegal in the laws eyes.
Some law enforcement officers have night vision goggles they watches people drink beer peacefully around the camp fire and writes them tickets, I'm sure from time to time they find someone doing things they shouldn't be doing. Kind of of Creepy if you ask me, for they can watch everything in the dark. The forest service and Sheriff set up road blocks right outside the park entrance so be careful. If you had adult beverages on the river make sure you dispose of it before you get to the road block. And do not leave anything in the back of your truck you don't want the law rifling through
There is a sign up a Long Pool now that says "alcohol Prohibited" this means you can't possess any type of alcohol in the park.
My suggestion is to camp a Moore's have them run your shuttle down to their house or campground and do not get out at Long Pool at all. It is only 5 more miles and only takes about another hour and half or 2 hours.
Be careful out there the law has to keep the peace; you may become one of their victims!!

Re: LongPool Question
In the many years that I've been going to Big Piney Creek, I've seen law enforcement go from one extreme to another and back again. Can't we just have a "happy medium" here? Let's face it: we are all law-breakers. You can't drive to the grocery store without breaking a law or two. One mile over the speed limit...and you are breaking the law. Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign...and you are breaking the law. ETC. So what we really need here are a few more Andy "use some common sense" Taylors and a few less Barney "respect my authority" Fifes. I mean: I don't want to go to Long Pool if I constantly have to worry about Pixie the pouch jumping out of my van before I have a chance to put her leash on and then getting ticketed for breaking the "leash law". And yes, I have seen that happen. I've also seen someone get ticketed here for not having a car-seat for their child who was probably old enough to not need one anyway...no warning...just citation. Come on, law enforcement. Lighten Up!!!
Goodbye thread.

Re: LongPool Question
I think Raftdog has summed up the issues at LongPool. The majority of individuals respect Law Enforcement and the tough job they perform. It is unfortunate that a few has made the rules for the rest. The Law Enforcement would not be at Longpool unless there was a reason. We have camped at Longpool every year for over 20 years and experienced some of the problems that Raftdog has mentioned. Although I think the extreme enforcement now is unreasonable, so were all the trouble makers. Now all campers are paying the price for a few individuals. Back in the day, we enjoyed the visit from the park ranger and the assistance they provided for our camping experience.

Re: LongPool Question
OK, this thread seems headed where every other Long Pool - Alcohol thread has headed recently. We've heard from both sides, and we have reminded folks to go read the Message Board guidelines. Nothing more to see---- as they say---- "move along now." Please do not start a new thread rehashing this issue - see the guidelines for that, too, I'm not going to spend my day retyping them. I'm going to leave the thread visible but locked so that "innocents" will not have to keep re-asking a legitimate question - "what's the rule at Long Pool?"
