Buffalo Trip questions/advice

Post by jesch24 » Thu Feb 19, 2009 7:11 pm

I'm trying to plan a 3 day/2 night trip on the Buffalo for my son and myself the 3rd week in March. It is our spring break in Austin and he wants to float the Buffalo. I was thinking of Ponca to Carver would be a good 3 day trip. Would that be doable in 3 days and still give us time to stop to fish and see the sights along the river? I know you've had some ice and road closures. Thoughts and advice are welcome.
Thanks Jim

You are talking roughly 35 miles. That is doable but may not be enjoyable. A lot depends on when you put on the river on day one and when you take off on day three. For example, if you have time to only paddle 5 miles each of those days the means day two will be 25 miles. Not a great trip. My philosophy is the less miles the better. I would suggest Ponca to Pruitt instead.
March is usually a good month for the upper river but no guarantees so you need to have an alternate plan downriver where water levels will be more reliable.

Hi Gretchen, The simple answer is yes. I have commitments the first two weekends. Rodger also. We are therefore looking at the 21st or 28th.

Richard, I would love to paddle Ponca or Steel Creek to Kyles Landing this spring, provided the north facing roads are passable, it's been way too long since we've paddled the upper section of the Buffalo. In fact it was during Spring Break last year. What do you think??

I just wanted to say THANK YOU, to all who replied and offered suggestions for my trip this week. My son and I just arrived back in Gravel Ridge and I thought I would send along Thanks. We floated from Pruitt to Woolum Mon-Wed. Water was okay, with a few scrapes here and there. Weather was wonderful, except for the Game and Fish doing a control burn between Mt Hershey and Skull's Bluff on Tues/Wed. We'll be back next year for Spring Break and will hopefully see some of you folks. Thanks again.
