I got this one...6 ft. rug. 12" per foot....72 inches. WOOHOO! Call NASA, tell em I'm on mah way to werk on some rockits!

I can't do the calculation,* but I can sue anyone who screws it up.

* The RBF does not do math, an activity better suited for pencil neck geeks with pocket protectors than fat hairy men who can only count in multiples of six. I've seen Satch stand in a daze for hours staring at the "Take a penny - Leave a penny" tray at Turner Bend. kenny hasn't counted past 10 since the last time he was able to see his toes. The numerical correlation between the big hand and the little hand still confuses nephew Mikey (that's understandable: Mikey thinks "analog" is a word you use to describe the cause of your injury to the gynecologist before he sews up your gaping head wound ("As I was helping clean up Beaver Pond I turned around analog hit me in the head")). Besides, when the grid goes down we'll need guns and guile to survive, not floor covering or slide rules.

OK - I'll let my geekiness shine thru ONE more time. But, I'll also give you the formula to figure out future octagonal rugs yourself.

If the 6 ft dimension is measured from flat side to flat side, one edge will measure 29.8 inches. (I'm guessing this is how the rug is measured)

However, if the 6 ft dimension is measured from corner to corner (a slightly smaller rug), one edge will measure 27.5 inches.

For any octagonal rug size do this:
Determine one half of the diameter, in inches. For a 6 ft rug, half = 36 inches. This number is the "rad" in the following formulas (for radius).

If the rug is measured from flat edge to flat edge use this formula:
rad * .4142 * 2 = the length of one edge.
Example: for a six foot rug: 36 * .4142 * 2 = 29.8 inches
For a rug that is 7'10": 47 * .4142 * 2 = 38.9 inches

If the rug is measured from corner to corner use this formula:
rad * .3827 * 2 = the length of one edge.
Example: for a six foot rug: 36 * .3827 * 2 = 27.55 inches.
For a rug that is 7'10": 47 * .3827 * 2 = 35.97 inches.

Meesh, thank you SO much! You really helped me decide on the size of rug I need. This is for my group therapy room and I wanted each chair to have it's own space. So it needs 3 feet--hence, the smaller rug won't do.

Thanks to all for putting up with such an Off-Topic post, but isn't it good to know we have the resources of the ACC for all our needs? :D

Thats what i was trying to do in my earlier post but my triangle just aint right! :mrgreen:
