Jones Center Roll Sessions (Saturdays in Springdale)

The pool session that was canceled due to the ice storm has been rescheduled for March 7th . We also have a session this Saturday the 21st and 28th.

We have the pool from 9:00 to 11:30.

Can I just show up at the Jones Center to practice my roll, or do I need to let someone know I'm coming? I had instruction at the UA a couple of years ago, just need to get some practice in...

Yes, the roll session is open to anyone to just go and practice. You might get asked to help assist someone else if they are short of "spotters", but if they see you are practicing on your own, they will let you just do your thing. If you need help on anything, don't be afraid to ask - folks who show up are all friendly and fellow paddlers.

There has been one change however that should be noted by everyone.

The Jones Center has requested us to no longer carry boats and gear through the building and to only use the lower swimming pool doors at the western side of the building by the playground. These are the glass doors in the recessed area we see at pool level on the far side of the pool from where we practice. You can still park in the main parking lot and carry your gear all the way around to the western corner via the sidewalks, but it is a lot shorter carry of gear and boats from the parking lot on the west side over by the playground. To get to this parking lot from the main lot out front, go west on HW 265 AKA Emma Avenue and turn right (north) on Community Park Drive. Go north to the back and then bear right (east) towards the Jones Center and the kids playground. Stairs down to the pool area are at the far right edge of the playground at the corner of the building. Be careful if there has been any freezing weather as sometimes there is ice there in the winter on those steps.

And please remember to rinse your boat off, inside and out, before putting it in the pool. Mud, leafy matter, and critters are not welcome in the pool.

I probably will not be there this week due to my neck problems - sorry, but not to worry - Fish, Joe Purdy and others have said they will be there. Might be back next week or at the last session.

I will be there for sure. I finally got all my gear together. I wil definately need instruction. Hopefully the RPM is as easy to roll as everyone seems to think.

We should have a lot of folks there to help with instruction. It will be a cold morning, but the pool will be warm. As Eric mentioned, please make sure you use the door that leads directly into the pool and not the end doors that we've been using. Jones Center has asked us to do this since there's been some water in the hallway that presents a hazard for others walking there. I plan on being there early to make sure the door gets unlocked in a timely manner. To get there, you can park in front and walk around, past the side doors and around the fence and down to the pool level. Or you can drive around the building on the right side (if you're facing the front) and then all the way around to the end. Then the carry is shorter.

just wanted to say thanks to the instructors who took time to help out a couple of newbies. Micah who had never been in a kayak before yesterday got his first roll as did I. very excited.

The pool will be open this Saturday. We will have fewer instructors then in weeks past since a lot of people are out of town. Feel free to come by and practice. Don't be to disapointed if their isn't a lot of one on one instruction. I'm expecting only one or two volunteers this saturday. Please bring your boat in from the pool doors mentioned in Eric's post.

March 7th we should have plenty of helpers.

I just got a boat but don't have a skirt or paddle. I have been before and used other peoples gear and I was wondering if someone would have a skirt and paddle that I could use there?
