S.W. Ark. Floating tomorrow Morning on the Caddo

Post by Jim Krueger » Fri Feb 13, 2009 6:01 pm

The level on the Upper Caddo should still be at about 6.25 feet at put-in time in the morning so we're heading that way. We'll be meeting at the Hwy 70 bridge at Glenwood about 10:15-10:30 (Caddo River Camping & Canoe Outfitters on the UPSTREAM side of the bridge)to arrange shuttle for the trip from The Narrows down to Glenwood. This is a class I+ trip but do dress for the very cold water and marginal air temperatures. Lurkers welcome.

Best Regards
Jim

A very nice day on the Caddo today, we had nine kayaks, a fairly sporty level of about 6.2 ft. and the river to ourselves! Marlo and I had just a great day and really enjoyed everyone's company, Thanks!
Good job Daniel on your first kayak trip!

Best Regards
Jim Moose

Great day indeed with good friends and to finish off the day with good friends at Rocky Mountain Grill and very good food. Look forward to many more days on the river and dinner. Wish the rest could have joined us for dinner, missed a good meal. Daniel, it was a pleasure paddling with you and meeting you. Connie, glad you made it. I will pray your hands and feet will heal so you can enjoy many more days on the river and in our company. Byrum, nice to meet you and your daughter. Hope ya'll can join us again soon. Pray for more rain.

Karla and Gary

Some firsts for me on this trip. First time I've seen a skunk swim across a river--in broad daylight! First time I can recall seeing a mink while kayaking (while I was kayaking, not the mink). Wasn't sure what kind of critter it was, but after googling some mink photos, seems to fit. Also first time I'd noticed the warm spring water coming out of the 2 inch pvc pipe. About 3/4 of the way down the river as I remember.

So, always fun to spot wildlife and discover new features on a frequently-paddled river.

Might consider looking into River Otters as your possible weasel family sighting. They are becoming ever more popular on the rivers we paddle. Mink are a little bit more rare and hard to tell the difference. They do usually have a small white patch on their chest whereas, otters do not.

They are fun to watch when they haven't been disturbed and are playing.

Coulda been an otter, I guess. Our sighting gave a brief but good view. Clearly a fuzzy tail. Dark brown with some reddish tint. Based on photos of both, I'd still guess mink, but it's hard to tell from the photos whether the otter tail is fuzzy when dry. What we saw was not nearly as bushy as a squirrel but had no obvious taper. Only other otters I have seen were up in the Boundary Waters. They seemed bigger than this critter, at least in my admittedly shakey memory. In any case, I always enjoy seeing critters on or around the rivers I paddle.

Where was I at when this supposed mink sighting happened? Also will you bring the coffee cup I left in your truck to the pool?

Hey Adam,

Hannah was the only one close to me at the time I heard some commotion on the bank. We caught a quick glimpse and then it was gone. So I didn't see much point in saying much about it at the time.

I'll bring the coffee cup. Still in my truck. NIce cup. I was thinking you might forget where you left it . . . :D

I had a wonderful time with you all but am still paying for it. Hands and feet are in real bad shape. As soon as I heal, I'll go out again with you and hurt myself. The pleasure is worth the pain. :(

Bob I got a grainy video of you up on google, but its not worth looking at. I've contacted paddledog, lets see if he can fix anything.

Daniel did very well didn't he? Now he wants to know where the white water is in Little Rock. Shall I send him to Rock Creek? He was very lucky to have Moose and Eubanks on his first trip! And you too Marlo!

Nice to see you Karla and Gary, Got to get my pics of the shade tree formatted before I post it.....

And very nice to meet the young Eubanks too!
I've felt the touch of healing hands, neath the willow trees and birch, cause the water's my religion, and the river is my church. Kenny
