whoop and holler park and play

Post by ebell » Sat Feb 14, 2009 4:40 pm

Had a great trip down the mulberry today with jim. just wanted to say that the lady at birds is not pleased with the amount of people using her land to access the river and not paying. I was the only one of four cars who paid today while i was their. she says she is getting tired of it and is very serious about shutting off that access. If you use it please pay and don't ruin it for those of us who are paying.

what time are people going to the mulberry tomorrow. I would like to go again.

thanks
eric

Is there signage up now telling people to pay? Maybe ACC could do some volunteer work here to put up a sign and perhaps a secure "pay box" so folks will be more likely to pay?

There is not a sign or a pay box at whoop and holler. I and those i have gone with have always just stopped at byrds and paid. It could be better posted. I believe that she has put a comment on this board about people not paying.

I, for one, would hate to loose this access. Whoop is the main attraction of the 'berry to me. I've been wanting to take my newly outfitted C1 there to try it out. Its way too uncomfortable to paddle the whole dang river in.

I think the self service pay-box is a good idea. However, this still won't stop the few bad apples who just will not pay. Don't know what the answer is to that. Maybe we just need to get the word out that if you don't pay at Whoop, the river gods WILL catch up with ya.

There also needs to be better signage for where to park & access the river at Whoop & Holler. When I was there it seemed a little unclear. I think people would honor a box similar to the forest service boxes at Redding.

Eric:

Where did you and Jim put in? If it was at High Bank can you comment on the reported tree down in Jump Start (the first rapid down from High Bank)?

Thanks,

We put in at highbank. The tree is blocking the entire left side of the river. You can go down the right side. a fellow kayaker and jim made it through just fine. I took a swim, but thats not all that uncommon. at lower levels a rock just upstream of the chute might cause some problems because its right in the middle of the entrance to the chute. We scouted it. Its not too bad, but something to be aware of.
