Floating the Red

Post by Chuck Ainsworth » Sun Feb 08, 2009 7:16 am

Dwayne and I had a good float last month up on the Mt. Fork and the Little River. However, Dwayne can't go this month so I am going to solo. Seeing how I just want to get out and do some paddling and seeing how there is a river in my back yard, I am going to float the section of the Red River from U.S. 71 to U.S. 67. Going to do this on the 17th. Yes, that is a Tuesday. This will probably wind up a solo run but just in case there is someone out there who wants to paddle the river but doesn't have a shuttle then maybe we can work something out. If not this month, maybe next month on the Brazos.

Good canoeing to each of you.

Post a reply by the 16th to let me know if you would like to join me. Of all the sections between Sherman and Shreveport, this is the shortest. Thus I am going to do it in one day. Easy trip but interesting.

Trying to find put in and take out points. I know you said HWY 71 and 67. Where would these points be and how lon a shuttle?

The put in point is U.S. 71 just north of Texarkana (8 or 9 miles) and is an Arkansas Fish and Game Commission launching area. The take out point is at Highway 67 near Fulton and is just an access point and there is no real launching area but you can get a canoe out with no problem. The lenght of the shuttle is probably 15 miles one way. You interested in floating with us, Mikeark?

I am considering it. Sounds like a good float. I have a 12' SOT Manta Ray by Native. Would this be a problem with the shuttle? Day trip or camp?

Mikeark, your 12' footer shouldn't be a problem. Considering this is only a 12 or 13 mile float it is a day trip. Where would you be coming in from? And would it just be you?

Would come from El Dorado, but my Tuesday calendar just messed up my plans. I would like to join your group on the Red or another suitable river/lake at another time. Most of the floats on this website are in north AR and the trip is so long from El Dorado.
