Richland shuttle road now open!

Post by Lazer » Sat Feb 07, 2009 6:13 pm

Reports from the field today 2-7-09 are that the Richland shuttle roads are open on the North side of the creek. The landslide and many trees still block Falling Water Road.

In addition, reports are that Richland Creek itself is free of wood from Cindy's hole to the campground. Reports of little to no signs of ice damage along the creek.

Now all we need is :rain:

Everything is primed nicely, but remember...there will not be anything up next week...there will not be anything up next week.

Hey Chuck -

Scott said if they don't go over to the east fork area tomorrow, they may hike down from the Richland put in since he thinks there will be probably be downed trees. He and some other folks hiked from campground to Cindy's today and all was clear.

Those guys yesterday did a swell job! :hammer: :hammer:

Too bad I got there too late to miss most of the fun. Today was good too. I did make some mental notes...

Cowper and the rest suggested you might want to bring a saw with you if you go up. There's still lots of slanted trees that will come down this spring. Shuttle could be a royal pain if you're blocked in.

A good chunk of the roads are still single lane and muddy. There's not too many spots to move over for other vehicles 'cause there's tree parts on the sides. there are small tree parts in the road so you may chew your tires up if you're not careful.

It looks different and you can turned around easily. I got on the wrong turn twice and was headed over to Bass.

HOpe you guys had a good weekend! ty

I guess the Missous got the road the the Hailstone cleared out on Sat - thanks big time guys! We helped clear roads at Melanie's mom's farm Saturday, and then headed out to the upper Buffalo area. Good news: minimal tree damage, if any, on the Hailstone itself. Still would be heads up for wood flushing from higher elevations though. Bad news: very bad tree damage on Adkins for first 1/4 mile with tons of wood in the creek, which means that Boen and Beech are probably not in good shape either near the starts of those runs. Didn't get to check Osage. Upper EFLB and Sandy Springs probably are not in great shape. We agreed that Beech should be top priority in that area, so we'll go to hike around to check it out soon.

The final ray of sunshine here is that we hiked Fern Gulley and there are zero new trees down there. The creek is basically completely clear right now, other than the massive tree problem at "Damned If You Do" just upstream of Juju (which has been there for a while).

That's all I gots to report. If anyone is up for a Beech clearing weekend, let me know.

- Fish

FYI: Talked with Mr. Knutson today regarding "how can we help" and he stated that Mike Mulford at the Hector office is coordinating volunteers looking to assist the USFS with the recent ice storm downfall. As indicated in earlier posts the USFS is reluctant to embrace/solicit volunteers due to "continued danger" but indicated that there are other "more safe" projects that can be pursued so as to free up other personnel.
