Maybe a novice on the Mulberry....
Re: Maybe a novice on the Mulberry....
If you do go this weekend be sure you have adequate cold water/weather gear. Seriously even if it's 70 like it's suppose to be that water will be a chilly and could make for a miserable experience if you're not dressed for it.
Have fun!

In response to fish's post, my first time in a kayak was on Piney in a recboat and it did just fine! Its amazing what you can do in a rec boat, they are super super stable, El Dino knows the drill. Hop in, waters great!
It could be worse, it could stop raining

Hopefully if I do swim, my dry set of clothes will keep me warm and toasty- If I don't swim, well then it will be a good day had by all!
If you are out there this weekend and see a guy with a rec kayak without a shirt on and a stocking cap swimming down the river next to his boat that would be me... please stop and say hi!

My 30 year old son & I plan to solo canoe Byrds to Turner Bend Saturday (warm weather has turned a hiking trip into paddlin'). Let us know if you want to meet. I haven't done this particular part of the Mulberry in 15 years, him in 10, but we're confident of surviving & having fun!!

Re: Maybe a novice on the Mulberry....
Alright, so here is the update-
Saturday we left from Turner Bend and ended at Campbell Cemetary... I will admit, I probably built the river up to be bigger than it really was. I didn't have any problems negotiating with my kayak, as a matter of fact it was 1 level above what I am used to. We had a blast and still hit a couple of big waves!!
Sunday we put in a High Bank and went to Redding?? I really enjoyed that stretch as it seemed to have more tight chutes and more rapids one after another. I didn't have any problems on Sunday either. However, it id seem more technical and was a bigger challenge for me to control my boat.
Conclusion-
#1) What a great river!
#2) My skills are a little better that what I thought
#3) I would love to try floating whe the water is maybe a foot higher... aound 3.9 or so- but I would only do that in the summer time when temps are warmer
Thanks for everyone's input- by the way, here is a link to some pics..nothing with any big waves but still some pics

Re: Maybe a novice on the Mulberry....
Congratulations on a great trip, Ken. Thanks for coming over to introduce yourself. And double thanks for the photos!!
My son and I had a fine trip down from High Bank to Turner Bend on Saturday 7th. I was surprised the water was that entertaining at 2.2 feet: many, many eddies to hit, a few easy surfin' spots, current through most pools. Glad you got to run it Sunday.
Please plan on attending the ACC Whitewater School at the Mulberry the first weekend in May if you have access to a whitewater boat. I went on '08 and it opened up wonderful paddlin' opportunities and led to making many new friends. Unreal amount of quality, fun, inclusive folks in ACC.
Hope to see you in May.
