Richland road blocked by trees

I don't want to split the work crew up too much, but I was thinking of trying to clear out the roads at EFLB and the Hailstone put-in. Anyone know if those roads need work too (I can't imagine that they don't)? Helping locals at EFLB put-in would certainly be good for boater relations.

I'm not Dale or Pam and I thought "Beta" meant the speed of an object relative to the speed of light, but I have met the he half of the couple that owns the place that's on the left (North side of the road to Eula) at the traditional parking spot for the LR take-out. Had a nice visit with him that day last year when ARG didn't get the shuttle screwed up. His wife's a doc in LR (the LR with the tall buildings, not the storm damage).

P.S. Forecast highs in the river valley are upper 60s on Saturday and low 70s on Sunday.

EFLB:
Heydenrich Road is open to the end of the maintained road. The mile down the hill that is usually walked won't be cleared out unless paddlers or locals do it.

I suspect the roads to Murray will be cleared by regular road crews, but wouldn't hurt to check and help if needed. There are 4 ways into Murray, so they may only clear a couple of them initially.

The road down to Sandy Springs Hollow is cleared to the bottom of the hill, however the water system should get the first half of the road to the put-in cleared this week. The second half will likely be low priority for the road crews. Creek is likely clogged like the road.

Hailstone:
Likely low priority for the road crews to go down the hill since not residences there. If folks want access, get in and clear it.


I'm optimistic that larger creeks like Richland, middle and lower EFLB, Hailstone, Hurricane will be only partially littered with wood. They are large enough to flush lots of the wood, but expect several trees to be in them. The small and micro creeks will likely be totally clogged.

Amy and I are down fore some lumberjackin this weekend.Im thinkin of finishing up richland on Sat. then sunday maybe clearing barberry since its pretty short and hopefully easy to cut on b/c of its steep bedrock characteristics.However i would also be down for going up to the gorge on richland to finish up and do 1 complete creek at a time.either way Ill see you fellas sat.JOEC.

Just curious Lance why you think the river will be any different than the road as far as downed trees? If it's as bad as the pictures you posted of the roads that could be some really nasty paddling until a couple big rains or a couple of dry chainsaw runs. Just wondering....

The answer is in my statement. The rivers are large enough to flush a lot of the wood. Unfortunately roads don't flush. The small creeks don't carry enough water volume to flush full sized trees. We'll see once we get into them.

Ahh, I missed that last paragraph. That makes sense. Judging by the size of some of those trees down it will be interesting. I can see why you say the micros will be totally clogged. Crazy stuff...

I know during the last ice storm down south, several of us spent almost 3 weekends clearing out crooked . I can only think that the micros up there are going to be worse.

not to mention that it will now take almost double the amount of rainfall durring the later spring months. With all of the new buds the canoppies will be much thicker:(

I think we should test this flushing theory out. Somebody order up 6 or 7 inches and we can get this show on the road! on second thought, i'm gonna feel awful if we have to use 6 or 7 inches just for cleanup purposes.

Hurry, Let's clean as many as we can before it rains!!! I propose we rotate watersheds with chainsaw gangs. Maybe we can get at least one creek cleaned in the Richland and EFLB watersheds to get it started. Cuz you know it's gonna rain like hell on the side of the mountains we haven't cleaned!!

I know some folks can't make it until Sunday, and I was still trying not to do anything to draw folks away from the scheduled Little Maumelle float. That said, there's probably folks who can't make it Sunday, and if we're also helping the landowners recover from this storm and not just clearing for us only, then I'll have to give that priority over litter pick up.

Like I said, I think clearing to Richland will be in the two to four hour range if we get 10 or more folks.

One of the issues is driving time - roads where we previously drove 30 mph have many stretches where you can now go only 10 to 20 mph, so count on the shuttle taking twice as long. This is significant; if we want to help the land owners near Eula then we might have to make that a priority at least one day, because by the time we drive to the Richland blockage, finish clearing to the creek, take a break, and drive back to Eula, it will probably be getting near dark. Also, I'd like to see a large crew show up at the landowners and really "WOW" them with the amount of work we can do for them in a short period of time; then maybe move on to another house and see if we can help them too.

I MAKE A MOTION: Let the cutting begin at 10 AM Saturday Morning! (Drive down the road towards the camp, trust me, you'll know when to stop and get out of your truck.)

Has anyone been down to Dixon Ford (Hailstone put-in) to check the roads there? We might swing by there before we go to Richland. If its bad, then we might be there all day. That is, unless you guys need us at Richland.
