Post by justin.payne » Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:00 am

Can anyone tell me with all of this Ice and Freezing rain will the creeks around NWAR come to a floatable level?

You may have a lot of 'fun' getting to your destination with all the down trees, road conditions, and powerlines...and sad looking people. I was heading to norfork last year to do some fishing directly following the big tornados and went through gasville...i have never felt so guilty for fishing after passing by all that destruction...i should have stopped and helped...sure do wish i did.

On a less somber note, I do believe we'll get some paddling out of this. Inches of precip is good for the whiteness.

Speaking of downed trees, I was on my way to work this morning driving on hwy 112 towards Tontitown and I pulled up on a city worker (A little lady about 5 feet tall) trying to clear a path for vehicles with some limb snips. Of the probably 20 cars waiting for her to finish, I was the only person to get out and help her. This really defined my image of peoples selfishness.

Susan and I are in good shape so far (and as prepared as we can be for expected power outages with all the buckets and tubs filled for water, stoves prepositioned, lots of stove gas on the carporch with the dry charcoal, and plenty of charcoal for all the grilling I'm planning on doing and maybe even looking forward to, weeks worth of food for the Russian army, Suburban tarped over and de-iced)... BUT, and I type this as the power flickers once more.....

There are others up here in NWA who may need help before this is all over. Even down here on Beaver lake we have limbs and trees popping like fourth of July. Chainsaws-R-US might consider a trip up here on Friday if they want to build up their karma any. I've got two chain saws, lot of lines and chains, 2 come-a-longs, peavy, several machetes, and hand saws so I shouldn't need any help, but check on the folks you know up here if you got their cel phones on Wed.-Thursday, as it ain't over yet. If you hear of someone who does needs help, let me know. I'll try to help as soon as Susan thinks I've done enough here.

Eric

According to NOAA website, it appears that Madison and Newton Cty have recieved between 2 and 3 inches thus far.

Don't trust radar precip estimates when it comes to ice and sleet. The returns tend to be exagerated, and so the total may not be nearly as big as it looks. Not saying there's not a lot of precip, just don't trust the radar estimate alone.

I was up around 4am this morning taking the dog outside for a poop/pee run and it was sleeting pretty good to lay down a layer of pellets on top of the ice layer put down last evening.

Back out side with the dog around noon time and we have off and on sleet and a nice blanket of pellets on top of the ice.

No driving for me till this stuff melts down to pavement!

Bottom line me and the dog walked around the back yard for a while and it was ok long as we stayed on the grass areas, went to the front on the drive way and street and it is pretty nasty. Also with the wind blowing it is pretty cold and feels much colder than the actuals show.

Based on what is happening here, my guess is it is going to get even more nasty over around Fayetteville and NW Arkanas before it gets better. Looks like a lot of this stuff is streaming to the East and North of us. Serious cold forcast here for tonight then warming some what in day light hours.

I know it is precip and we may get some creek bumps on flow, but man I sure will be glad to get out of the ice storm season.

Brace yourselves over there cause there is more to come

Over and out from Jenks America just south of Tulsey Town.

My power has been out since about 1 Am here in the Fort. Came back on at 7:30 for just about 30 minutes then went back off. Just enough time to make some coffe though. House is starting to get pretty cold now. Hope it come back on before this second wave that they are talking about.

This is random, but I have noticed it for the last two days....

Does anyone else notice in Cherokee County, Oklahoma the little circular snow blurb on the radar? I am curious what this is.

I got a phone call from Eric Esche. He says power is out and he can hear trees popping. But as of the call he is doing fine. He was concerned about others. I saw on the news that there are about 100,000 entergy and Coop customers without power. All in north Arkansas. Things are OK in central Ark but expected to get bad tonight.

Just got power back on here, but who knows how long it'll last. Sirens all day and trees popping like crazy. Same in Yellville, only power outages are worse.

it's true you can't believe radar estimates, but this looks pretty reliable.

Is everything up that way pretty much impassable? It sounds nasty.

I think they're reporting Madison Co is worse than Washington. Also heard Yellville is really bad. Not sure about Newton, but it is under the same ice storm warning Fayetteville is. If it's been hit as hard, the roads will be ice and tree limbs (if not trees) will be down everywhere. Unless you have a big 4WD with studded tires or chains, a good chainsaw, and a very good drysuit, Richland may be a tough proposition. Let us know if you make it though. :)

We went out into a winter storm one time to do Osage Cr. Got to Ponca with snow but no ice. Then solid ice from Ponca to Compton. Dodged downed trees on the highway, but the 1/2 mile dirt road was solid ice and downed trees every 50 feet. We gave up, paddled Boxley to Ponca with ice freezing on our gear and paddles, and headed home. Two big 4WD's and the one hour drive home took 3.5 hrs.

Your mileage may vary...

My question is how does kayaking on icy streets/hills compare to snowy streets/hills. Just thinking about tomorrow :-)

Seriously though it's awful in Benton Co & we're hoping Eric & the folks around the lake are doing OK. There's much less trees on the West side of Rogers & so far the power remains on. I'm not optimistic though.
