Trace creek?

Post by jackatspa » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:06 pm

I was wandering if anyone had any information on Trace creek? It is located off of hwy 7 near Bear,AR. Looks like there are two or three low water bridges that make for very easy access. looks fast...

Thanks, Jack H

A very fun little run indeed. I've run it several times over the years. It's also quick to drop out, so timing is of the essence. Bear Creek is a fun run also, and with a better watershed. Theirs a low water crossing getting to the Bear put in that often floods. Easy walk up to the put in if you can't make it through the low water bridge.

What creek(s) do you use as a guide for the level and what level are you looking for at those creeks? When is it runnable?

The south Fourche LaFave gauge has been my closest resource for levels. If the Fourche is rolling big, Bear becomes quite runnable. If you cant get to the bear put in through the low water bridge, Trace is going to be fun. I don't think I've ever caught Trace up over a hundred cfs. Both Bear and Trace are good relatively non life threatening Creeks good for honing your Creeking skills. A few strainers on Trace, but so far their has always been a clear slot through somewhere. Just drive slow to the put in and call it having been bank scouted.

Trace Creek pics at low water. This is a fun run for me, a class II open boater and also a favorite hiking area.
You can pull off the HWY and park beside these ledges. There is a sharp turn above these ledges where the water pushes in to a bank, usually with stariners.

This is above the sharp left turn at very low water.
This creek is normally only floatable for a very short

This is where Little Bear dumps into "Bear Creek"

Hey Jack,
If your lookin for something cool to run in the area, by far the coolest creek in those parts is Angling creek! I 1st d'ed it last season w/ Duffy after a 2-3 inch rain.Main attraction is 3 major bedrock drops. Pic of 1st one is attached.2nd large drop is a very technical double 90 degree turn waterfall and is definitely the main attraction,we called it Nasty 90! Third large drop is the Shuffle, and it is fun, fun, fun. 1 would rate the creek as 3-4 depending on the level and if you fired up the Nasty 90. Gradient is high for a stream in this part of the ouachitas.(well over 100 fpm)Pic attached is of me @ 1st drop Bathtub falls. peace out, Joe C

While we are talking about that area, has anyone paddled Alum Fork of the Saline River from 34.814174N 92.996501W to Lake Winona? Or any part of that section? The blue line is about 10 miles.
