Anybody got the NRS toaster mittens?

they look pretty sweet, and warm...just wondered how they were.

dont like pogies cuz i want to keep my hands in the gloves if i let go of the paddle...these seem like a good alternative

None of the NRS gloves that are thinner are warm (and the thicker ones feel like you've got oven mitts on).

The cheaper ones (016BK) are more comfortable and almost as warm, but not as durable as the more expensive model (002HBL).

If you check around online you can probably fine one or the other on sale.

yeahh i just dont really like fingered gloves... i like having all my fingers together.. like pogies.. but i want to keep them on if i lose the paddle, so mittens seem like the perfect choice. but that blows if they arent warm.

I've got the toaster mittens. Ok for riding a raft but make it difficult to pull your skirt when you really need to. Also there hard to get on and off. They make your hands useless for all but very gross motor skills.

I can't wear NRS gloves. All of their gear runs a size small. I can squeeze into the XXL clothing, but the gloves are a nightmare to take on and off. I swapped to Glacier Gloves and love them. If I were you, I'd email them and recommend they make a mitten. I read recently that a pro kayaker went to work for them. I imagine they will be looking at more kayak related products in the near future.

My hands didn't stay as warm as I wanted them to last winter so I'm thinking about checking these out. Does anyone carry them locally? If not how do they fit compared to NRS? I didn't see a size chart on their website. Thanks.

I think I called them about sizing. They said to get my normal glove size. I got an XL and it worked fine. An XL in an NRS glove is really hard to get on and off. The Glacier Gloves have a looser fit in the wrist, so if you submerge them, water will likely get in. The nice thing about them is that the wind doesn't penetrate them like the NRS gloves though.

Thanks for the email. We are working on a mitt right now. We have
actually been working on it for a while now but because of a fabric
issue it has been delayed. We have been looking for, and have recently
found a Tuff Tech type of fabric similar to the fabric that NRS uses on
their Toaster Mitt. So, we are now moving full steam ahead with the mitt
project and should have it finished by spring. As a paddler myself, I
understand your desire for a good mitt as I generally prefer one as
well.

I have been wearing these mittens for about 4 or 5 years. When it is bitter cold these will keep your fingers warm. The palm on mine is a thinner rubber neoprene with the sticky side so paddle feel is still relatively good. The backside on mine is 3mm neoprene with fuzzy fabric lining the inside. Because they are mittens you lose all dexterity for detailed things but putting a skirt on takes only a bit of extra technique. They're articulated so gripping a paddle is their natural shape. The cuff is fairly tight and because of the 3mm backing it makes them a little challenging to get on and take off. You sacrifice those things for warmth though and that's a trade off I prefer.
Once several years ago we did a mooner on the St Francis with the temps in the low 30's/upper 20's and at the takeout we had to break ice off our skirts. The backside of my mitts were crusted in ice too but inside my hands we relatively warm.

i'll probably snatch some of the toaster mitts... for this winter...

but definitely plan on grabbing some of the glacier glove mittens when they come out.

Like Shelby said, there is some trade off, but worth it if you like warm hands!

Since cold weather will more likely find me "creeking" than on a bigger river, I have a strong preference for gloves, and I require a fairly high degree of dexterity. I also get chilled easily, and often wear gloves when others do not. But even in some pretty cold weather, I can almost always stay warm enough and have the paddle feel needed using the glacier gloves, if they are unlined and NOT the "two side" nylon.
