Rapid of the Day - National Falls

Post by Big Daddy D » Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:39 pm

Now there should be plenty of stories from the Upper Yough. I know a certain someone has new footage with plenty of carnage of some Arkansas boater "styling" a boof into a hole. So I'm hoping this will inspire that certain someone to start editing. I even have a great song he can use.

A Topo-Duo special:

Ok to keep up my responses to these (At least the ones I've been to)

The Upper Yough is always a good time. Especially watching the lines at National. It's not the toughest or most dangerous on the river, but always seems to dish out a healthy dose of :hammer: , especially to those who go for the right boof and don't quite make it. But even though it can dish out some powerful thrashings, if you can hold on for 8 seconds you will likely flush out and have a chance to recover in the runout. But sometimes 8 seconds is a long time, just ask a bullrider.

Upper Y is my favorite out there in WV. National ain't too tough though. You can even surf it out if you hang on. For intimidation factor see the main lines at Herzerling-er-whatever, Meat Cleaver, or the non-conservative lines at about a dozen other drops. Or just fire up National down the middle, leaning back on your stern.

What a great run! Like crossing the Gauley with Richland Cr.

Echoing the above. Upper Yough is on my Top 5 list and once you've been there, easy to see why it's a cult classic. The funky little whitewater microcosm there in Friendsville just adds to the package.

National get's you on your toes, but yeah - what Fish said about Meat Cleaver. Sorta like my first track coach said, "Run all the way THROUGH the finish line" and make sure you're all the way through the runout!
Let there be rain!

Yeah, if I had a rapid of the day here for any of those drops it would be Meat Cleaver. I love drops where you hit a cool eddy, turn around and look and say, "Are you sure I gotta run that line?!!" Cleaver don't look pretty at all and it is always the rapid I am most proud to make it through upright and airtight. A few times, I've been amazed that something didn't really clean my clock in there. But it always seems to work out for me... I don't want to see anyone get in trouble in that drop. Plan "B" probably involves getting crushed headfirst into a rock while praying your kevlar helmet really is indestructible!

Man, that is one fantastic run!

Ok, I took the bait. And I found the song for it on my own.

Enjoy!

The Upper Yough is a really fun run and National Falls does not really even need a scout to just run through it, but if you want to style it, scouting is suppose to help. Although ALL of the Arkie Boys looked before going for the hero eddy and you will see how much that helped…

(Maybe some Dierks video to follow)

Instant classic

Now that's what Rapid of the Day is all about!!!!!!!!!

Will Smith on the rhymes is totally dope. And Coty and Joe get some sick style points. I think I'm gonna grab me a bag of Fritos and watch that again.

Way to represent Mr. H.
