Cajuns on the Buffalo

Post by RomanLA » Tue Oct 21, 2008 10:18 pm

My kayak club down here in Louisiana scheduled a multi-day trip on the Buffalo for the first week in January. We'll definitely be needing some help to figure out where to paddle. :D

First of January?
Coming from LA?
My suggestion: SABINE RIVER (Louisiana/Texas)

If you are really planning to multiday it on the Buffalo in January, I would recommend base camping and do day trips. Campgrounds will not have water. But there is no camping fee in January either.
Water and weather determine where and how on the Buffalo.

Last year we were blessed enought to float Ponca to Kyles during that time and camped at Sneeds creek, pretty sweet, no other boaters. I hope it turns out that way again, but not likely. It is really hard to say if water will be there for that time period, safest bet is middle to lower area of the river, say carver to tyler bend, or maumee to rush, I was able to float during a time with no rain for a while during the summer months from carver to the woolum area. No current only dragged a couple of times. The great thing about the winter is no other boaters usually at all. Just be really careful to have the right gear for cold weather. If you go from carver down you will pass the Gene Rush WMA which is one of the more remote spots on the middle river, which would make for good wildlife watching, last year we had two cow elk drinking across the river from our ten only about 40 yards away.

Hope you have fun, be careful and pack extra brats to warm you up.
...Well I guess theres nothing wrong with what you say, but don't sell me their can't be better ways..
