Flatwater trips

Post by lbaker » Mon Oct 06, 2008 6:36 am

OK, I know it's sacreligious to mention flatwater to a mostly ww group, but since I didn't get to practice anything I learned at Rec school, due to neck surgery last summer(not paddling related), I will retake classes as soon as they come up and hopefully be in good shape for next summer. I'm really wanting to get out and paddle and was wondering what some areas like the Cache River, lower Saline River, etc might offer. I'm coming from NE TX so the lower Buffalo isn't an option for a weekend trip, unfortunately. I am also looking for ideas for the week of Thanksgiving, as I have the whole week off.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Leigh,

I'm hoping Marlo and I can get back out floating the Caddo and Upper Ouachita again soon, in which case you are welcome to join in. If you come up for paddling by yourself, I'd recommend flatwater for sure, for the safety aspects and because it's more difficult to self-shuttle on stream floats. There is a two mile trip on the lower Caddo, near Arkadelphia, that would be good for a solo trip if they're not generating and if you have a bicycle to use, or hike to get back to the car.
Other suggestions are the Lower Lake below Lake Degray, also near Arkadelphia, and Lake Catherine. Both are close to Hot Springs for accomodations. More later.

Best Regards
Jim

We will be taking a number of trips this fall on Bayou Deview, Cache, Wattensaw and the lower White River. I will be posting these on the Recreational page. All are welcome to come along.

A small group of Ozark Society members from N. Louisiana are doing a Red River overnight float this weekend -

"Red River
Sat morning going to meet at 7:00 at McDonnalds I 220 in Bossier . Go up to Hwy 2 and drop shuttle then on up to Doddridge (Spring Bank Ferry) 18-20 miles back down to hwy 2 . This is the shortest overnighter we have done and have not repeaded it so thought it would be a good choice. Long range weather shows windy and poss of TS but wind will be at our back for a change :)"

all who are self sufficient are always welcome.

The sandbars are usually vast and the firewood plentiful.

Lots of wildlife usually - gators, pelicans, eagles, beaver, otter, deer, coyotes

Great low angle panoramas - http://community.webshots.com/user/butchcrain" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - see the 2 Red River folders
