Gas Cap on Which Side?

Post by Crane » Tue Sep 23, 2008 10:19 am

A non-paddliung friend sent this to me... even paddlers might use it...

Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the gas station wondered...mmm, which side is the gas filler cap?
My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck to look, try to see in the side mirrors, or even get out of the car.

If you look at MOST gas gauges, you'll see a small gas pump icon.
The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the gas pump.If your tank is on the left, the handle will PROBABLY be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will PROBABLY be on the right (Unless you're driving Zack's vehicle...)

Damn, that is great.

What pisses me off more than not being able to find the cap on someone else's car is coming back to my own after a couple weeks vacation with a rental and not being able to remember which side my car goes.

Yep... when that comes on, which side of the pump do you pull to? The side the guage picture points to...

Crap, no dice.
My little pump icon has the handle coming out on the right, but my gas cap is on the left.

I'm with ya, Zach. I heard this little tip a few years ago and thought it was awesome since I often find myself in different vehicles. I've now come across two vehicles where it doesn't work. More than not, it rings true, but not always the case.

Hey! Let's change it to "most" and "probably"... then it will, again, be MOSTLY fact.

Many vehicles have a triangle-shaped "arrow" on the fuel gauge that points to the side where the fuel filler is located. Both mine are like this.
