Well, all you folks missed out. Ended up just Heath, James and myself playing in the big hole. Jason and Sabrina were there but did not want to play with us.
It was a liberating day. A day in which you could “Free your mind”. It was awesome and so much fun. We played about 15 minutes in #1, about 30 minutes in #2 and 3+ hours in #3. The water was warm the air temp was super nice and the hole was actually a little flushy for what we wanted to do, but still very fun.
The 3 of us went there not with a goal of throwing down our best tricks and looking “cool” for each other, but with the purpose of facing our fears and getting ourselves into situation we were uncomfortable with and learning from them. These goals were accomplished by all, and I think each of us became a little better paddler then we were before.
We started off with the playboats. James had never been in anything like this hole before. So he faced his fear of just getting in it. He got hammered the first couple of rides but soon learned how to calm down and move around in it. Even threw a few set up tricks. Heath and I have played in it several times but Heath admitted he has never been comfortable in it. And I over time have gone to just dropping in, throwing a trick or two and then getting out. I was afraid of staying in there too long, getting winded and then not being able to get out, gracefully.
After 30-45 minutes we started just swimming through the hole and jumping right into it. Then we broke out the creekboats. Punching the hole was easy and I just could not even get the Hero to plug it, so we moved on to getting into it sideways. Getting in and out took some work but we figured out different tricks. After that we started just upstreaming ourselves and loading the bow and stern on purpose. This would flip us and get us all out of position and force us to roll up in weird ways. By the end of the day we were dropping into the hole in creekboats, sideways, with no paddle. Just bare hands.
We all swam a couple of times. Some swims were on purpose, some were not. But it did not matter, It was all so fun. I had the video camera running but it ran out of battery long before we ran out of fun. I will try to edit it down to just the best hammers and moves and get it posted. But remember we are deliberately doing many of the things to ourselves.
We were at dinner by 5:15pm. We all were really starting to stiffen up as we all were complaining about being sore. I feel like I had been beaten with a rubber hose. It is a lot of work getting worked. Today my lower back is hurting, think it could be because of
this?
All I can say is you missed out and life is good. Headed to the Gauley in 4 days, staying gone till after the Cheoah on October 4.
