Float trip on the Buff in Aug.

Planning a float trip in early Aug. and was wondering what level do I need for a decent float on the Buff? Would like to do anywhere from Woolum down just depends on the water and which section would require the least amount of paddling. Thanks for any info.

On the St. Joe gauge the river is at 5.69 this morning. Anyone know which gauge that flow chart goes by? Thannks.

Go low. The lower Buffalo down by the hwy 14 bridge is where you will find water in August. No guarantee that you won't have to get out of your boat and drag it across some shoals though. It is totally rain dependent. If you just want to do a day float stick close to hwy 14. If you want to do a multiday(atleast 3 days, 4 is better) the wilderness section from Rush to Shipps Ferry is really outstanding. The shuttle is class IV though. Even in August you can make it pleasant trip by swimming every hour or so. Down on the water it is usually 5-7 degrees cooler than anywhere else. Pick your campsite based on having shade in the morning. Rush to Shipps ferry is a good labor day float when every other part of the river is dried up.

Hwy 65 / Tyler Bend / St. Joe. 4.5 on that gauge is the bottoom end of ample. The middle river may be with us all summer.

The reading I saw for the USGS gauge at St. Joe at 8:00 AM this morning was 4.99'. I'm curious where you saw the 5.69 reading.

USGS gauge. I just looked at it again and I guess I miss read it. Wishfull thinking I guess.

I agree with Scott that Rush to Shipps Ferry would be a good trip for August.

I may have to do that myself.

Scott is right about everything except the shade. Shade in the afternoon is far more important than shade in the morning. That is . . . until the sun comes up.
